Just got pulled into HRs office. Apparently it’s offensive to some people to organize a weight loss challenge in the office and offer gift cards/prizes for winners for motivation.

Challenge pulled, and everyone will remain fat and happy I guess. I hate what this world has become.

Why would someone call out the fatties at work?

Wtf? What has this world come to indeed!

Change it to number of steps taken instead of weight loss. That should fly. Encourage the fatties to walk some.

We do it. And the prize money is pretty nice.

Accountability and competition can be strong motivators for some. Sad state of affairs right now.

They did them at my old job but it wasn’t company/hr sanctioned

It was mostly late 20s early 30s former athletes betting on who can lose the most weight

Our company offers weight watchers for free as long as you go to X amount of meetings. We have a whole weight loss/overall health initiative with all kinds of resources available. No one forces anyone into anything. It's all there for anyone who wants it.

Must suck to have a bunch of SJWs in your HR department, OP.

Had a boss get his drawers in a twist over this very thing years ago. The contest was named "Fatso", so of course we (some old school plant baws who truly DNGAF) renamed it:

Fraternal
Association of
Those
Slightly
Overweight

Look at the insecure fatties differently from now on.

We just finished that challenge at our office, and no fat people were harmed in the process.

Encouraging people to be healthy is now offensive. What a time to be alive.

I’m still wearing my anti-fatty ugly Christmas sweater to the Christmas ummm I mean holiday party this year.

Was it company sponsored? Was it mandatory to participate?

If a bunch of employees want to use their own money and resources to do this, I don't see where HR would get upset, unless HR is a 400 lb lady.

A healthier workplace is a productive workplace. I would be against mandatory participation of course.

Technically it was company sponsored since the prizes were going to be purchased by the company (gift cards, extra vacation days, etc). Participation was not mandatory tho. Completely voluntary.

Email with all the details went out on Monday and by this morning, I was pulled into HRs office and told to cancel it. They suggested if we still wanted to do something, it should be something where everyone had equal chances to get a prize, like drawing names out of a hat each week for those participating.

I just sent out an email saying contest was off.
