According to the article, close to 5 hours from departure to arrival.

At 5 hours, you just assume drive or for the poors ride a bus.

Heck Greyhound’s cheapest rate is about 30 bucks and you get there in 2-3 hours.

There are 3 buses a day.

New Orleans - Bay St. Louis - Gulfport - Biloxi - Pascagoula - Mobile

I could see riding from BSL or Gulfport to New Orleans and vice versa as an alternative to driving and parking in New Orleans.

I would say so you could drink but you still have to get home from the train station.

NO to Mobile Amtrak

I foresee a whole lot of cultural enrichment on those trains

The port and the state jumped in because with the agreement this allows for the release of 223 million dollars in federal grant funding of which 72 million will improve rail infrastructure for the port.

This seems like something the Mafia would raid like Tony does with the esplanade project in Sopranos

Its like a 90 minute drive

Why would I do this?

You cover 144 miles in 90 minutes? I just had to Google search. 2 hour 10 minute drive. Here are some of the stops of the new train route:

two trains will run round trip from New Orleans to Mobile with stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula

What if people want to travel without using their own vehicle? Or people that don't have a vehicle want to use this mode of transportation?

I swear it's crazy how anti-public transit this entire board can be. I get it that CATS is trash but I would absolutely pay a company the amount it would cost me in gas to get me to where I have to go.

My sister (no pics) had to take the Brightline last week to get from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando and back. The service is incredible. It's absolutely utilized in that part of the state. Why not bring this to the Gulf Coast?

I'd love to send my kids to grandma's and my wife and I ride a cabin train car from New Orleans to Jacksonville.... but it sounds like these morons want to terminate in Mobile for some dumbass reason

Pre Katrina, the train went to Jacksonville. Lots of “resistance” on both sides to reestablish this service train, including MS.

Did they have this service before Katrina?

It's $40+/day just to park the car. I also would prefer to ride and get some work done over three hours rather than be my own driver for 2.5 hours.

One of the reasons we took the train from Birmingham to NO several years ago. A round trip ticket was $72 all in. So for less than $150 I didn’t have to pay for gas, drive us down there, and pay 4 nights parking at the hotel. Sure it took about 2 hours longer than driving it, but we got to relax, chill in a lounge car for part of the trip, and if it was a work trip I could have brought the laptop and worked some on the trip.

If trains are that popular then why did all the private passenger rail lines close down? Why aren’t they reopening if there’s a big demand?

When I think of a lot of short routes that could actually be beneficial enough to gain traction, NOLA to Mobile is probably 10000th on the list.

If they had gone NOLA to Pensacola, I may consider applauding the decision.

I don’t know on the viability of passenger service in mobile and am skeptical of the economic impact it will have but with the new airport being located next to the train station who knows I guess.

New airport at Brookley just isn’t going to happen. That project is seriously way way behind and over budget. It is at least 3 years delayed at this point and might be cancelled all together.

And the price just goes up for a family. It makes no sense for the public. But totally makes sense for mobile city council as the federal govt is going turn around and give them $75million! Tax payers taking it up the arse on this one.

Yep it’s the Maritime Museum all over again. They are just pursuing projects to get federal funds to deal that money to friends

Well it’s already under construction and they raised the first beams for it back in May. So yeah. It’s happening. I know some of the jesco guys on the project. Target opening date November 2025 but I’ll be surprised if they make that.

Some people are afraid the criminals from NOLa will ride over to BSL for a day of robbing…then ride back home all pockets full. I think that’s dumb AF.
