No tipping - one thing the Europeans have right

I arrived yesterday for my first trip to Europe. It has been so refreshing not being expected to add 20% to every purchase. Taxi fare 20 Euros, you pay 20 Euros. Waitress brings you the bill and credit card machine, there is no option to add a tip. Stop at a place while walking down a sidewalk to get gelato, it cost what the listed price is. And guess what, the service is still great and the people are friendly even without having the tip option when you pay with your credit card or without having a giant tip jar next to the register.

It’s easy not to tip. Just say no or hit the ‘no tip’ button. Do it all the time.

Sounds like you had a different experience than we did. We found the service was hit or miss. At some restaurants it was great (usually the nicer ones) but most of the restaurants you were constantly having to try to get your waiters attention.
When the service was good it was on par with what you would find in the US, but when it was avg to bad it was worse than you would find in the US for the given price point.

I tipped the kids that made our pizzas. I like rewarding kids that work.

I tip in sit down restaurants and the person that cuts my hair.
That's about it.
I don't tip at Marcos when I pick up my pizza. We always do pick up. I don't tip at Jersey Mikes and other fast food places.
I think that's a good system.

The Europeans no tipping policy comes with higher wages and socialized medicine. It’s not an insular thing to their society. It’s a part of the socialist way of running a country.

If I'm standing up to place my order, no tip. I certainly do not tip at places that hand me an empty cup that I fill myself.

Tipping along with food prices are out of control - Tipping and hourly pay are higher than ever. Costs of product are ridiculous and service is as the worst I’ve ever seen it in the US.

When I go out to eat, I don’t want to play payroll manager. It’s not my job to determine your pay. The fact that I am pressured into putting up with that tablet and guilt tipping after choosing to support your business is bs.

This won’t last much longer. The American tipping culture has already infected major European cities and the service workers love the idea. It’s slowly expanding, but every year more of them are seeking tips.

I’m gonna say this again. I know a couple owners of bar and grills, daquiri shops, and bars.
No, i won’t tell you which ones.
The common thing that each owner has said is that doing the numbers and like 70% of people do not tip and in order to keep decent staff, they will internal gratuity certain bills and certain things have internal gratuity automatically added on to them. The owner is the only one that can access where it shows what was added to the bill for internal gratuity. You won’t see it on an itemized bill.
It’s to protect the servers and bar tenders. I know lots of yall get hot and bothered over that but it’s not screwing the restaurant. The owner gets their money, it’s screwing over the person serving you if you don’t tip.
One of them said he ran a test for 6 months and made spreadsheets based on size of tables, what was ordered, etc. every server/bartender was getting screwed. So it’s a philosophy the quite a few places have adopted to protect their workers because a massive percent of people do not tip.
