Lot of tankless heaters are mounted outside because of the way they are vented. Mine is outside mounted between the studs. Got down to 8° last night no problem. I have a heat strip wrapped around the inlet pipe inside the unit. In my area to meet code it has to have a 110 outlet inside the unit to plug up heat strips or a heat bulb.

I threw boiling hot water on mine and it started working in seconds when it froze New Years Day

Thats a good way to cause a cracked pipe from the shock of that drastic of a temperature change. Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hand warmers.

crack the relief valve - if the unit kicks on then you have a line frozen going FROM the tank to your faucet fixtures. Also can open the cold and hot secondary valves and see if there is water coming out of them. If not, you have frozen line going TO the tank.

I think this is correct. I did both, and when relief valve was opened it kicked on my heater so I knew the heater was working but there was just no flow for it to know to turn itself on.

End of the day it just let me know that the heater was working...still had to wait for lines to thaw out, which they did about 2 hours ago.

Mine has done the same thing the last two freezes. Once it warms up a bit outside I just run the hot water in a few locations until it defrosts. Thank goodness I have 2 tankless water heaters. Only the side in the wind tends to freeze. Good luck.

What brand? Most will give you an error code on the control panel. Heat exchanger may be out. Call the manufacturer if it is 6 or less years old. Should still be under warranty

To avoid putting it in the attic. Tankless heaters are almost all run on gas. Some people like mounting them on a exterior wall. It’s not something I’d do bc water heaters should be centrally locates and that is often an issue on exterior mounts. Both options have drawbacks. Attic mounts can leak and cause damage in the home.

Call a plumbing firm and explain to them that you girls have a tankless job for them.

frick you. Wow, people with a lot more experience don’t have this issue, is that because they tried to build them to try to withstand? Or just because they are libtards and you fricking idiots are hating it?

Did you leave warm water drip from your faucets or cold? The warm water pipe might've frozen if you only ran cold on drip.

I fricked up and did that last night. But the warm water is running again

Same problem here. Electric tankless water heater. When I turn on hot water faucet, I have some cold water coming out, but not much. Checked pipes outside and don’t see anything frozen. They are all wrapped in foam.

When I built my house they said my tankless unit had to be in an insulated garage at a minimum. Preferable to be in a temperature controlled space. I don't know if they knew what they were talking about or not...but I've be in single digits the last two nights and my water temperature has been fine (with the unit in the insulated garage).

Having a water heater outside is one of the dumbest ideas I've heard of but it's not uncommon. Not sure why plumbers do it but for anyone who isn't a moron I'd demand it move into the attic or garage at minimum.
