Original thread on the shooting.

A grand jury declined to bring charges against an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who fatally shot a mentally ill man who assaulted him in a Southern California Costco warehouse, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said Wednesday. The officer was holding his child when he was assaulted.

Officer Salvador Sanchez, a seven-year veteran of the LAPD, opened fire on June 14, fatally shooting Kenneth French and wounding his parents, Russell and Paola French. A family attorney has said Kenneth French, 32, was nonverbal and suffered from schizophrenia.

Hestrin said the results of the investigation were presented to a grand jury this month, and the panel declined to return charges

Hestrin said the incident happened "very fast," with Sanchez firing less than four seconds after he was struck. The officer believed he had been shot and that he was firing at an active shooter, officials said during a Wednesday press conference, citing witnesses who heard him say he had been shot and saw him reach to the back of his head multiple times to look for blood.

Believing his life and his son's life were in "immediate danger," Winslow has said, Sanchez fired his handgun. Ten rounds were fired, officials said Wednesday. Four bullets struck Kenneth French, and each parent was hit once and wounded. The LAPD is conducting an administrative inquiry into whether Sanchez followed the department's policies. The officer is on paid administrative leave, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Galipo has said Russell and Paola French were trying to explain to the officer that their son had a mental disability when Sanchez opened fire. Kenneth French, of Riverside, had been taken off his medication because of other health complications, which may have affected his behavior that night, Galipo has said.

I'm sure the off duty police offer knew at once that this man was mentally ill. If he didn't, why didn't he stop to ask him before he shot?

Look...I don't know whether or not the shooting was justified. Apparently a grand jury thought he was. But one thing I do know is that whether or not a man or woman was mentally ill is irrelevant.

On one hand I get the protection of his child angle, but on the other I'm not sure a healthy response is unloading half a magazine on three people while holding the toddler.

He went beyond seeing a nonexistent gun to thinking he was legit shot. I'm not sure this guys gets much the first time.

The father restrained him and told the cop that he was mentally challenged.

The cop shot within 4 seconds.

The question/standard to meet should as simple as "Would a non-tin badge carrying citizen who reacted in the same manner" be turned lose without charges or sitting in a jail cell?

I'll never understand that. If they have propensity for violence and will go crazy on random strangers at the drop of a hat, why aren't they walking around in a bubble suit instead?

mentally challenged.

Mentally challenged people can still use guns.

Why did the parents take him out when he was off meds is the question.

If this was a regular guy and not a cop I would give a little more leeway but a cop with training should be held to an even higher standard when it comes to shooting someone.

Salvador Sanchez arrived and vanished
Only twenty-three with so much speed
Ownin' the highway

Mexico City bred so many
But none quite like him sweet warrior
Pure magic matador

Pancho Villa would never rest
‘til 1925 he closed his eyes
To Manila stars would rise

Ghosts of the Phillipines
Choirs and angels sing
Ukelele strings play for his legend
Iloilo king

How have they gone
Felled by leather
So alone but
Bound together

Benny “Kid” Paret came a good way
Climbed the grey sky to raise his hands
Stopped by the better man

Eyes of Las Villas cry for sons
Lost on distant shores, unforeseen horrors
Struck and delivered him

How have they gone
Felled by leather
So alone but
Bound together

How have they gone
Felled by leather
So alone but
Bound together

You forgot to mention that 4 of the 6 shots that connected were in the backs of the retarded guy and his dad. So 2 out of the 10 shots fired were at someone facing him. 4 were literally shooting someone in the back, a retarded guy and a senior citizen.

And the parents begged him not to shoot their retarded son because he was retarded, and unarmed.

This cop is a piece of shite. I am not so evil that I wish harm on his 1 year old, but I do hope the cop catches a few bullets in his back and spends the rest of his life paralyzed.

frick him, and frick the idiots on the grand jury.

At least the parents will get a few million from Costco and the PD.

shite like this is why people like myself hate cops.
Yea. They’re under stress and do a job most thinking people don’t want to do, and I give them leeway for that.
But, when stuff like this happens, they circle the wagons and protect their own.
More institutions need to start doing the right thing, or public perception will continue to fade.

Fricker is/was a cowboy. I didn't know about the shots in the back. That makes it worse. I'm all for 2nd Amendment rights, but a guy who shoots another person in the back inside of a place with people shopping doesn't need to ever be able to use a firearm again
