In Louisiana there's such a shortage of officials that you get people who literally don't know what they're doing.

A couple weeks ago I had a ref actually tell me that a horse collar wasn’t a horse collar because the runner fell forward. He admitted the hand was in the shoulder pads and the player pulled him down but in his mind it wasn’t a penalty because of the direction the player fell.. the rule is clear about the players knees buckling, etc… his idiocy wasn’t limited to this call so arguing became a moot point.

The lack of qualified refs is exasperating the problem as coaches and fans get frustrated with a lack of quality refs and smaller crews. It’s beyond the simple parent/fan problem as refs refuse criticism and many times legitimate questions from coaches.. Dear Facebookrant over….

It’s a vicious cycle. Refs don’t want to do it because of a-hole players, coaches, and parents that complain about everything. So we get inexperienced and bad officiating and the criticism gets worse, so people are less likely to become officials.

I do feel bad for the ones that do it right. For the most part, we have had great officials this year and they’ve been friendly and talk through the questionable calls with professionalism. But we’ve been burned a couple of times on missed calls on special teams because we haven’t had a full crew all year

100%. I’m not sure of the solutions in all sports but football should be easier to fix as the fan interaction window is smaller. In the end. It will take pay increases but added accountability to weed out lazy refs. Whether now or 30 years ago… quality refs can’t be thinned skinned around coaches and coaches have to be better and calmer about mistakes/missed calls..

Trola- horse collar tackle isn’t a foul in HS football if he’s tackled going forward. Grabbing the collar in and of itself isn’t a foul.

It looked like a group effort. Fatso pulled the chain tight then pushed it forward a foot before putting it to the ground

This might make a good gif for future use

You’re right but…
It is when the player is on the side and pulled down and the knees buckle My argument was.

He had a clear hand in the shoulder pads at his side while running and and went down on his side causing both of their momentum to go forward but also to the side as his knees buckled and landed on top of the defender. The defender left his feet and used the grip on the pads to pull him down. His argument was simply him falling forward to the side negated the horse collar regardless of knees buckling and positioning. Our player was actually injured on the play which is the whole point of the rule.

Only 4 posts into the thread and we see illustration of why people don’t want to referee high school football games.

Pulling runner by collar to the ground sidewards is a penalty agreed.

A guy I know, his dad was a HS ref for the longest time and was able to become a member of the chain gang for LSU home games. Actually he is still with the chain gang but doesn't ref HS anymore.

What happens is that the better, most experienced refs get assigned to the bigger matchups. In Louisiana, I think they have things divided in regions. I think there is the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge area, Hammond area, Lafayette, Lake Charles, etc.

This was years ago, but at the time the guy told me that the the New Orleans and Shreveport area had the most experienced refs, but then you have guys who are alternatives because its common for first year refs to not show up to a game and pretty much quit without telling anyone so most HS games will have average at best refs.

The ref in the video is pitiful. I read somewhere that he had relatives playing on the team he gave the first down to. No telling if its true, I saw it on social media so I took it with a grain of salt.

You’re absolutely right about the more experienced refs get the bigger games, as it should be. The major problem is a shortage of refs, not that they no show. Right now, first year officials are doing varsity games which is a tough ask. In other states it takes 3-4 years to break into your first varsity game. LA is also doing a lot of games with 5 man crews instead of 7 man.

This is correct plus there is an Alexandria association. They are so bad we use the Lafayette association for Bunkie home games. If you play an Alexandria team the bias is obvious
