I think it's a combination of:
- kaep and others taking a knee
- fatigue from everyone talking about ^ constantly
- constant BS penalties
- boring, predictable product

And commercials. Way too many.

I quit watching religiosly when Dallas paid all that money for Deion Sanders...and then after 2 seasons of Terrel Owens I finally grew up and realized the current NFL is for douchebags.
It's days of greatness are long over.

The NFL has never been more profitable. This ratings issue is more of an indictment of traditional (read: archaic) rating systems than a measure of the effectiveness of boycotts.
Consumers are finding lots of different ways to watch games these days: HD antennas, ESPN apps, TV streaming services, Kodi, etc.. Until the ratings compilers figure out how to account for cord cutters, the ratings will appear to fall for every event.

I'm confused. Whose boycotting the pro kneelers or the non kneelers?

I would say so. ESPN overpaid by multiple millions over the next bidder to secure the televised rights.
But what happens when ESPN and NBC and CBS stop paying so much? They are the ones taking it in the nuts. When a sponsor doesn't buy airtime, they fall further behind in their profit projections. (When you see a network promo over and over during a program, that means they failed to sell the spot.)
I remember SEC fans thought CBS would pay through the nose when their TV contract's look-in came up, but CBS held fast and did not.
I think their stockholders will demand fiscal prudence and sanity.
Edit: And in the process, football salaries will suffer. They are killing the goose that laid the golden egg (again -- see baseball strike).

When I get home from 12 hours of work on a Monday evening, I just want to open a cold beer, watch some football, and turn off my brain for a couple of hours before I go to sleep and do it all again Tuesday. Instead, a bunch of millionaires who never finished college have decided that these two hours are the perfect time to subject me to a complex and divisive political debate about perceived racism. No thanks. My down time is my time and I'll be damned if I'm going to watch football that resembles garbage cable news political punditry from Fox and CNN.
This is the primary reason for the loss of fans. People do not want to mix entertainment and politics. It is killing ESPN. It is killing the NFL.

Man I don't notice any of this while watching a game. Don't let a handful of idiots ruin something you like. Don't let them win.

No offense, but they ARE winning. See: Confederate statues.

Precisely. And Kaepernick sucks on the field. He likely wouldn't be employed even without the flag crap.

They think ratings are down because of pro Kaepernick boycott? Lol these people are tone deaf.
Ratings are down because football fans want to watch football. Not be exposed to political BS every time they turn on a game and then see a pussified game full of bs penalties

I was like biggest Mavs fan. Never missed a game. Now, I saw not one single game of NBA last year. I live in DFW area. Cowboys played this weekend. I used to watch every game. Same with the Saints. Lived and died with them. Played fantasy for ten years. Now? I really don't care. I didn't see a single game. Didn't miss it. Very telling.

This is the 4th straight year ratings have been down. Better find another scapegoat than Kaepernick.
The number one thing I see people bitch about, all over the web and in person, is the commercials and constant stoppage of play.

From an article from Dec 2016 LINK
The rating were going down while Kapernick was still playing and throwing his lil tantrums. So this "boycott" to force a team to take him is BS. Nobody is boycotting to bring him back
"Along with having a negative impact on the field for his team, could Kaepernick be impacting the league as a whole? The evidence seems to indicate that the answer is a strong “yes.”
Earlier in the season, a Yahoo/YouGov poll showed 29% of NFL fans are watching less football than they have in previous years. A whopping 40% of those people said that Kaepernick was their reason for tuning out the league, while 53% said it was the league-wide protests as a whole that had them turning off the television.
The reason was especially prominent in people 55 and over.
Overall, NFL ratings are down as many as 20 points in some markets and fewer fans are turning out to see their favorite teams in their home stadiums. ... it’s hard to deny that Kaepernick has had a direct impact on the game.
Kaepernick gets booed where he goes and has even been made into a pinata and had beer tossed on him"

I stopped watching NFL because college football is a superior product to watch, for the most part. At least I enjoy it more.
Also their PC bullshite is getting old

This is the stupidest theory for the ratings slipping of the NFL I've ever heard
Go back to the poli board. They'll believe this shite in a heartbeat. Confirmation bias is not a psychological term over there. It's a way of life.

I'm just thinking out loud here: but why hasn't the NFL ever addressed the fans' concerns/complaints about the game? Does the league have their heads buried that far into the sand that they don't even realize that people are pissed off and tired of their shite? Do they know and just not give a frick because the money keeps rolling in?
Not sure I've ever heard the NFL address their decline

Aside from the Super Bowl I watched one NFL game last year for a bit and watched part of the Saints game a few days ago. I am done for the season watching that shite.
