Because this is exactly the same as going to the Bahamas for a booze cruise.
These senior trips are all highly coordinated and almost always have a good number of parent chaperones. I would have no problem with my children going on one.
This situation is of course terrible, but it's not a reason to not let your kids experience life.

You’re right, It’s probably more dangerous
Agreed. Those Bahamas senior trips are pretty darn safe. But I mean if the kid jumped out of the boat at night....
I don't know if that's for sure what happened, just seemed to be the case. So my bad if misinformed.

He got drunk and made a bad decision. It could happen anywhere and his mommy or daddy being there wouldn’t have made a damn bit of difference.

People generally do not understand how much faster currents move in the gulf/ocean than inland. You can be 1000ft away in a minute, and with any type of swell, unable to keep your head above water assuming booze was involved.

Not to mention the size of the aquatic life just beyond the reef.

Young kids that just graduated, foreign country, drinking, bad decisions, parents lost a child.

Oh 100% true. I’m deathly afraid of open water.

This is gut wrenching. My step son was on the cruise. My daughter sent me a video. Young man is in the water and just starts floating away. Someone threw one buoy to him. I don't understand why there weren't 20 buoys thrown at him. It's horrific.

My kids definitely aren't coddled, they handle their own problems, have been introduced to a lot of positive things above their age level, and are well-traveled, but we do protect them from mature themes. The issue is that today, many parents fight all their battles for them so they do not have decision-making skills, failures, or consequences. Also, they think they are immortal and many do not have the life experience to understand how precious life is. Again, most are not going off to war at 17/18... the Tik Tok generation-They have been conditioned to do dangerous/stupid things to entertain people for likes and clicks. The person who filmed it may have already been filming if this was a "Hey, watch this!" moment if he indeed jumped as mentioned in the thread last night. Apologies if that is speculation and he fell off. Condolences either way, I cannot imagine.

I’d have a hard time not putting on a couple of flotation devices and jumping in myself. Human nature.

On the phones of every teenager in Baton Rouge by now, I'm sure.
Its not going to be imbedded in a news article I wouldn't think

From what I’ve heard I’m not even sure any of the parent chaperones were on the boat.
If you’ve ever chaperoned a trip like that you know some of the parent chaperones need as much or more supervision than the kids.
