The two hospitals my wife has privileges at have tons of cash, I didn't say all large hospitals have money to burn but quite a few do. Both her hospitals are short on nursing staff because so many of the young nurses without families are traveling. They are paying ICU nurses for COVID units ~$3000 for a 5 shift week just to keep the ones they have from traveling.

Bankrupt all the hospitals, govt takes them over, Medicare for all, then Universal Basic Income for all.
They say "for all" but what they really mean is the unemployed. They still need you and I to keep working so we can pay more in taxes and more in our insurance premiums to pay for that part of "for all". And meanwhile, we're supposed to feel guilty because we're "so privileged" to have jobs that pay the bills (even though it doesn't just stop at simply having a job and requires us to get up everyday and actually work to keep that job).

I guess the person downvoting our replies thinks that we should just shut up and work and provide for those who take.

Haven’t you had 8 months to figure out that the check from one covid patient is <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< the scheduled outpatient imaging/procedure which were completely put on hold by the government?

Which in turn only makes the hospitals assign more to covid as their reason for death. Hey they gotta get some crumbs

Absolutely. Wife showed me some of the available travel assignments to her and she almost took some of them because they're paying just absurd money. She is an ICU nurse so there was never any point where her department (or NICU, PICU, etc) faced any staff layoffs. It has been nice because they're offering bonus pay almost every week.

I was unfamiliar with this quote until I read Atlas Shrugged. While much of that book and Ayn Rand’s work in general is hyperbolic, this quote in context with the book is terrifying. Considering what we have seen for the past few years, I am ready to find my own Gault’s Gulch. Lol

We are heading for some very interesting times for sure.

Even a blank check won't fix the nursing shortage particularly the ICU/COVID unit qualified shortfalls. Most hospitals run a lot of units/floors understaffed. It doesn't mean they change the nurse/patient ratio but they pay overtime for a lot more shifts and or pull from the pool.

While hospitals that have temporarily closed some med-surg floors may have an overabundance of med-surg nurses they may be very limited on unit nurses qualified to be on an ICU/COVID floor. Above and beyond the finite number of these nurses in the area to begin with some are taking travel nursing gigs because they pay so much and many others got burned out on the 5, 6 or even 7 shift weeks they were doing early on and now are balking at anything over a standard 3 shift week.

My wife is a respiratory therapist at a large Baton Rouge hospital.

The hospital just implemented incentive pay to therapists/ICU nurses who pick up extra shifts due to low staffing numbers.
