News Flash: Voucher Schools Suck
LINK

quote:

Not a single school in the voucher program received an A or B. Three received a C. Of the remaining schools, 19 got a D and 15 got an F, based on the Louisiana Department of Education rating system.

The state doesn't publish stats if a school has less than 10 voucher students per grade, so only about 2/3rds of voucher students attend a school that was graded.

But I would imagine those other schools are D/F as well.

Of course, the critical flaw, that some of you private school supporters will point out, is that the curiculum used in many private schools doesn't align to the LEAP tests.

This is a valid criticism.

But why was that allowed? If a school wanted to suck on the voucher tit, they should have been required to have a curiculum that aligns with LEAP. No one is forcing schools to accept vouchers.

We put in all sorts of accountability measures for traditional public schools and for charter schools, and completely whiffed when it comes to vouchers. I think that whiff was intentional.

And for those of you who will say "well the parent knows best", that's fine if the parent want spend their own money. If tax dollars are being used, the taxpayers deserve to know that the money is being spent to get the kids a good education.

Flame away!

Isn't it a sure sign a private school is going to go under when they start taking vouchers?

It is like drinking seawater when stranded in a lifeboat lost and starving.

Dude.

That’s like requiring us to learn Spanglish because there’s some Mexicans in town.

Nope.

When in Rome, do as the Romans or GTFO.

ETA: Private school teachers hate the voucher kids.

Don’t you have this backwards?

No one is forcing parents to send their vouchers to these schools that don’t make LEAP requirements. If you aren’t happy with the product, don’t send your kid there.

frick your stance of making private schools an extension of public school by the vouchers. If parents were happy with public school performance there wouldn’t be a value to the voucher for them.

Additionally, why are you ignoring that it’s pretty much a proven fact that a teach to the test format can give you superior scores at the cost of inferior students down the line.

It sure seems like it.

The most successful/popular private schools don't accept them.

The ones most on the edge/struggling with enrollment are the ones taking the most voucher kids.

Another in a LONG line of Louisiana failing its students. Education in Louisiana is an after thought.

These parents are under the assumption that the private school is automatically better than the public one, which is a deep-held assumption here in NOLA at least. Even when proven wrong.

And besides... if tax dollars are being used, the parents should not get as much say.

Private schools love to say they don't teach to the test. If they were to accept the state curriculum, and take LEAP, this would be a great chance for them to prove their point.

This just states what we already know. Scores are influenced most by student quality. I’m sure teacher quality can make some difference, but all the data I’ve seen says the student quality is by far the driver in these test scores.

So, if a student is going to be a shitty student no matter where they go, then to me there is no reason for vouchers. Just leave the kid in a traditional public school or a charter school.

Perhaps if these kids were going to good private schools, it would be better.

So take them away.

I’m just against using vouchers as a strong arm to force private schools under de facto public school administrators.

Particularly in a place with as many shitty public schools as LA.

No....no it wouldn’t.

The whole “teach to the test” problem is that how they generate artificially higher scores than the students true aptitude at the cost of ignorance of anything not on the stated curriculum.

You want to test it, make both schools have to take another system’s test format altogether, and see who does better.

Is it? The LEAP isn’t exactly difficult or outside the box

Generally, yes. Most good private schools have people knocking down their doors to get in.

Neither is what most of the lower-rated private schools are using.

Also, there is an issue of timing. LEAP is given too early, so it's possible that a school not using a curiculum aligned to LEAP might cover the material after the test.

I'm not opposed to this.

I also think the tests should be given much closer to the end of the school year.

So glad the schools my children went to opted to hard pass on the voucher program.

Anyone who has any experience with the voucher system knows it was a way for private schools to cherry pick athletes from public schools. (I understand it wasn't meant to be that but that's what it became after the first year.)

Well, you get what you pay for.

re: News Flash: Voucher Schools Suck
This will be controversial, but it’s up to parents to make sure their kids are educated, not schools. If the district is failing it’s because the majority of parents treat school like daycare and not school.

Take the smartest 10% of students across the state regardless of district and I bet 99% of them have parents who actively push their kids to be better, and hold them accountable for work. If you want to fix the schools you have to fix the parents. Vouchers, public, private, non of it makes any difference if parents treat school like daycare

How the ratings are generated? Or the fact there is a rating system at all?
