ExxonMobil has chosen Baton Rouge as the site of its long-discussed new polypropylene production unit worth an estimated $500 million to $1 billion. The company announced its final investment decision this morning, saying it will fund the expansion project at its Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant.

Construction will begin later this year and startup is expected by 2021, with the project expected to create upwards of 600 jobs during construction and 65 permanent jobs once completed.

“Growth in feedstock supply along with the increase in global demand for chemical products continues to drive our strategic investments and expansion along the Gulf Coast,” says John Verity, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company, in a prepared statement. “We’re well positioned to meet the demand for these high-performance products and investing further in Baton Rouge enhances our facility’s competitiveness.”

The engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project has been awarded to Baton Rouge-based Turner Industries and Jacobs Engineering, with Exon saying the companies will use local workers to design and construct the new facility.

The expansion project is a part of ExxonMobil’s broader $20 billion Growing the Gulf initiative to expand its manufacturing facilities in the U.S. Gulf region. See a video message from Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant Manager Steve Hamilton on the announcement.

I guess this just means that even without ITEP, what they can get away with in Louisiana is worth way more to them.

Someone needs to open up a truck nut stand across the street from the plant to catch the baws entering and exiting the plant

I still think it was a terrible idea by the school board to even test their luck on this.... And as much as I hate to say it, shite like the NYT article bashing Exxon and sticking up for the school board, might have helped us here. National perception (whether it is reality or not) matters in stuff like this.

But it seemed clear Exxon was just playing hardball. They knew LA residents would immediately panic with the "they are going to Texas now!!!".

All that BS about the ITEP and they had a huge expansion planned. They could afford a few tax dollars.

that's the same question i was asking myself. were were getting a larger portion then the tax exemption issue forced them to reduce expansion dollars.....

so we are getting 2.5%-5% of the money they are planning to spend in the gulf region.....

doesn't sound like much of a win.... great they are spending money, but how much better if it was $3-5B instead...
