And the fact that it scared the shite out of your dog should scare the shite out of you.

Does she appear to be avoiding your wife in other parts of the house? I have a theory that your wife beat the shite out of your dog in a PMS impulsive rage and the dog hasn't been the same since. The fact that she (the dog) lays down just outside the room to sleep indicates she still wants to be close to you but is too afraid to get another beating at the hands of your psychotic wife.

Hm you might be right. Usually beating me is enough but she's been a little more on edge lately.

In your update, you said she stared at an empty spot on the wall? Could there be a creature behind that spot that she can sense and you can not? Mouse, bat, Rat, armadillo, sloth, bear, etc.?

With this, she will howl and whine until we open the door for her to run out of the room. So I don't think it's something she did wrong.

Well, it reminds of this:

I'm guessing some paranormal entity is spooking the dog.

I said this too. I'm not talking some shite out of a horror movie, but I think your dog is sensing a presence you don't.

If by "us" you mean you and your wife, congratulations. It's rare for mentally retarded people to get married.

This is a really good guess. It might be this, but why would it scare her? Wouldn't she want to chase it?

She's stopped the behavior for now, but we'll see for how long.

I know.

but why would it scare her?

Cause she can not see the creature making the noise/smell/haunting sounds in her mind.

I would wager she has never chased a single thing that scared her.

Have you had any recent breakers that have thrown? Dogs can sense/hear/smell electrical issues within the walls. Small arcing, popping.

Just a thought.
