new tires - manufacture date missing

Had to replace a tire and I see that the manufacture date on my “new tire” has been grinded away.
1) What is the “oldest” you would accept a new tire to be?
2) How would you handle the situation?
I am thinking 1 year max but would like to hear other opinions. Going to the shop later to figure out how old the tire is..

They do this with take offs, that tire is probably not even new.
For buying a new tire, anything over a year is too old. That is paying full price for a new tire, if this was heavily discounted and it doesn't show any signs of age you could probably roll with it. I prefer nice new tires all around, they are the most important thing on your vehicle.

Personally, I would never accept any tire with the DoM that had been "grinded away".
I bought a new set of Goodrich tires for my old chevy this past Feb, one of which had a DoM three years older than the other three that were manufactured last October. Took it back and the tire dealer had no problem ordering a replacement.

What kind of place are you using?
Wouldn't leave my car somewhere that would think this is an ok practice.

always check this before you let them mount it
as to that tire, 100% its already expired its safe to use date or they wouldnt have ground the date off.
that said, at this point they will deny it and say you must have rubbed a curb with it so you are SOL

Wouldn't be surprised if it was somehow illegal. Can really imagine the tire manufacturer not being cool with it.

Tell them you want a brand new tire without the DOT date scrubbed off.
That’s pretty shady of them.
With that said even a new tire may be 6-10 months old when it finally makes it onto your car.

The manufacture date is only stamped on one side of the tire. Did you check the inside sidewalls?

That’s what the guy told me. No I didn’t check and assumed it would be on both sides. This is what the outside looks like, so I assumed it was scuffed off.
He said the date is on the inside and gave me a receipt that showed the DOT numbers. 3821.
Not great but not the end of the world. I have never had to ask for or verify the manufacture date when buying tires but I will from now on.

Looks like you rubbed a curb. Those scuff marks from "them grinding it off" extend to the edge of the wheel as well.
