New Jersey has its redeeming pockets but is pretty widely regarded as a dump
Hate to break it to you but that’s from people in NYC and Boston and comparable NE cities. Jersey is paradise compared to the shithole that is NOLA

Don't forget the access to Jesuit and St. Paul's boys, if he's like the rest of the archdiocese
St. Paul's is a Christian Brothers school and not run by the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
But I'm sure you already knew that.

The answer is the New Orleans archdiocese is considered a prestigious posting
This is not false. The Archbishop of New Orleans is very influential and relevant locally, more so than Archbishops in most other potential locations.

So the entire Northeast, in other words? Got it.

For one, he is being promoted from a bishop to an archbishop. Your question might be more properly framed as why does New Orleans get an archbishop as opposed to Metuchen, NJ or Baton Rouge (which have bishops)
Don’t they also have some say so over the other bishops/dioceses in Louisiana or no?

EXACTLY my thought when I saw him on the news!

Don’t think those are correct

Second oldest for sure. I think Baltimore is the oldest.

Hopefully someone that Gayle won't have dominion over and we can end that circus.
He was seen holding up a signed football in a presser yesterday. I’m sure she’ll be having lunch with him soon.

I’m glad they picked someone from outside the area as next archbishop.

Yes.
An archbishop controls his own diocese (an archdiocese in this case). There are other diocese surrounding the archdiocese. Those are administered by bishops. Together, they form a "province".
The archbishop is the highest ranking authority within the "province".

Yeah, the archbishop is a metropolitan. In this case, they have oversight on all other Louisiana dioceses.

It is the second oldest
Far from second largest

The diocese where he is coming from, has more parishioners but fewer parishes.
Even after the recent waves on consolidation, there are still a lot of smaller parishes, especially compared to other places.
The archdiocese also won’t have many resources post bankruptcy.
Expect the new guy to do another round of consolidations. He won’t have any ties to the area, so no one to influence him. Hrs a numbers guy.
