Better Hope You Don’t Need an Ambulance in New Orleans, Because the City’s 911 Operators Are Now AI

It’s also worth noting that AI voice chat remains highly flawed even when powered by frontier AI models, with plenty of opportunities for errors both in how they process information, and how they dish it out. A February study by the media software company NewsGuard found that in voice mode, AI bots like ChatGPT and Gemini produced false claims with realistic audio up to 50 percent of the time. Emergency calls to 911, needless to say, are often extremely chaotic.
Meanwhile, AI voice systems are also persistently vulnerable to outside attacks, with cybersecurity researchers successfully manipulating voice model’s behavior with an average success rate between 79 and 96 percent.

Is that really worse than who would probably be hired to take the calls?

I would trust Artificial Intelligence way more than the Natural Ignorance of NOLA city workers.

They just need to program the AI to say “say baby whatchu got an emergency or something” when answering the phone.

NOLA residents used to call 911 for an ambulance ride to Charity, so they could jump out and go to the Saints game a few blocks away. Basically a free ride.

after 8 years of teedy, I had high-ish hopes for Moreno, but she seems just as inept.

AI is such an incredible tech, but to think that a municipality would decide that they should use it in this capacity and seemingly as the front line is ridiculous. Nothing says you care about your fellow citizens more then forcing them to talk to a chat bot when they need a human more than ever

Always good to read comments of those that have to say something but can't be bothered to read the article.

And the OP left out the most important part of the article while quoting the negatives

Everyone read the title and became 911 experts who believe the current system implemented cannot be improved.
The article doesn't even mention negatives of the system implemented. Just spouts generic information about chatgpt.
