naa, those pumps can suck down most anything. ive seen them suck down traffic cones. the system is just not turned on (or broken)

Could be you're closer to a pump, so it appeared it was draining at first, but as upstream water flowed down towards you, it filled up the system. The pumps could still be going, but they can only handle so much.

yea, possibly, im not going to say i know exactly what is happening

i do know that it was working during the heavy rain, then it stopped during the light rain and we started to flood, and now its working again.

The drains don't suck anything.

Everything is gravity to the canals. If the canals are rising, then there's more water falling than what's being pumped (either they aren't on or aren't enough of them).

If the canals are steady or falling and the streets are rising, then the pipes in the streets are clogged or not big enough.

This might explain why Gentily and Lakeview is flooded the worse this morning

meh, suck or gravity, same difference. the power behind the system when its ON or working is obvious.

like i said, the catch basins will *suck* down traffic cones with ease, so the excuse that debris or tree limbs are blocking the system, is just that, "an excuse"

There are pics on NOLA.COM showing how high the Palmetto Canal was. That means the pumps are not working as designed.

On the best days, the pumps can only handle 1" of rain in the first hour and 1/2" every hour after that. Today's 3-4 inches an hour is way above maximum. Not saying the pumps weren't working, but they also aren't designed to handle that much water, so backups were inevitable.

people keep saying..."the pumps just cant keep up"

that's true they cant...but they should be. The pumps are underperforming and this will explain it to you.

Right.

There are multiple issues.

1) The drains/pipe capacity gets exceeded. The water is being bottlenecked by the capacity of the drains and pipes (which may not be completely open due to damage, being filled up with trash, etc).

2) The "lag" time of the pumps. The pumps do not stay on 24/7. Further, they are mostly not automatic. Someone has to turn them on and keep them running. When a big storm is predicted to come, they can have people there at the stations ready to go. When unpredicted storms pop up like this morning, they are unprepared and have to get people to the pumps and get them turned on. (they aren't all manned 24/7). That takes time.

3) A lot of people don't realize this, but "street capacity" is part of the system. The system is designed and run knowing that some water will temporairly be held in the street, similar to a detention pond.

Correct. Nola uses 6" as their storage capacity for the streets.
