Houston is in a similar boat. Their pension plans for retired city workers, fire department and police have severely impacted the cities budget. No rainy day funds to fall back on.

The Legislature needs to pass a statutory framework for placing insolvent cities in receivership. Remove the local elected officials and have a state appointed receiver take over. Imagine the crimes that would be uncovered.

No one wants to cut out things but the only way to fix it is to gut all the small unnecessary spending that is just feel good.

Programs are great but until the city gets in a better position, that’s something that has to get cut

Some of the festival stuff should get cut. I know people will lose their minds but a few of the fun things are gonna have to be on the list in order to fix the money

The only hope is a receivership like Detroit to get things back on track.

the actual deficit is $160 million

$31 million was over stating revenue
$57 million was over time

How much of the deficit is the FEMA projects will determine how bad the mayor's office screwed up.

All of the FEMA projects that have been completed with city money, but the administration was slow on completely the reimbursements before the government shutdown.

quote:

“FEMA is a reimbursement project for the most part. So the city fronts the money, then FEMA reimburses,” Giarrusso said. He added that when the government shut down, it appears the reimbursements stopped coming.

They don't care. Latoya probably would have been re-elected had she been eligible to run.

It's 16 years. Mitch the Bitch has a lot of culpability in the current state of the city. Was he worse than Teedy? No, that's not possible. But, it's going to be 20 years with the easy on the eyes communist in charge.

Bitch Landrieu was such an utter disappointment. I truly believed he would be a good leader but was such a failure.

The problems with nearly every public entity always seem to revolve around pensions. They seem incapable of managing this.

Most private companies have gone away from pensions and use a 401K match to help fund their employees retirement. Perhaps cities and states should consider doing that.

Oh, you mean locals got fat off of federal money, didn't plan for the future and start to restrain spending and manage expectations before the faucet was turned off?

Here's my shocked face. F local governments with budget problems and all the useful idiots that voted them in.

This. Cause the problem then present the solution.

The solution will only cost you a little bit of your freedom.

This is the guy really running our city.

Never had a job in the real private sector.

Claims six degrees from a fake college named National University.

Looks like most of his time is spent overembellishing his resume.

I couldn't agree more. The waste of 8 years of possibility under Landrieu is costing us dearly. He's long gone and we are still paying the price for him letting the city rot. Even with Cantrell's irresponsibility, it wouldn't be nearly as bad as it is if Landrieu had done his job.

And that's before we talk about the city council. They see the finances too. Why weren't they sounding the alarm?

"Water is Wet" The City of New Orleans has been broke since at least the 1970s. It makes them judgement-proof. When I see or hear "news" of people suing the city, I simply shake my head and chuckle inwardly.

New Orleans rivals Jackson, MS for the worst run city in the US. I do see a link in the intelligence of the leadership.

I wonder where all that money NO rec'd to fix up post-Katrina went. NGO's and "community activists".
