Open floor plan offices are incredibly dumb. I'd go crazy being in that environment for 8 hours a day.

Didn't all the Shark Tank folks crap on those work pods? Or did that Hrzcvk guy on the far end but into them?

As a contractor for a couple of months in 2006 I worked in an office pod. It wasn't bad. I got some privacy, and the pod had its own vent so I could control air flow.

But it's not the kind of work environment that makes you feel valued or respected. It's about right for a short term contractor.

We have a two-person version one of those in our office. They got it with the thought that people could work on projects or something in there. But, it was smart for secretaries to conduct their personal business. I don't want to hear the morbidly obese secretary in the office ordering couples massages for her and hubby.

Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Bob Slydell: Great.
Peter Gibbons: Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.
Bob Porter: Da-uh? Space out?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

I had not worked in a typical corporate environment when I first saw this movie. It was over a decade later when I did and realized what a genius movie it was.

Minus the phone booth, that is exactly what my company is working on right now. Granted, it's been in the works since I was hired 2 years ago, but they did finally order furniture.

People under 25 love the concepts. I don’t know anyone else who does. I work in an office like that but I have a glass office overlooking everyone. Even then it’s distracting to constantly have to see everyone and everything around you. Almost everyone has earphones in the head 90% of the day so nobody talks to each other. The collaboration aspect is nonexistent. I have a guy whose office I can see and he will set up a phone meeting with me vs just walking 20 feet away.
