re: New Infrastructure Spending Plan likely means a NOLA -Baton Rouge passenger rail link

I think a commuter train at a lower price would have better outcomes. A high speed train will be expensive to ride and neither option will save significant time on the commute.
Low price offers the advantage of commuters saving money.
Getting priority on the routes would be the big sticking point. Federal dollars to rebuild the spillway rail bridge in exchange for 80% priority (or peak time).

So that means the track has to be updated mostly likely - especially the elevated parts over the spillway.
They have been rebuilding that for a while... I would have hoped it would have been built to those standards

Have you ever been on a highspeed train in Europe or Asia?
I used to ride the KTX in korea a lot. It was awesome.
Of course they have about +55 million people living on a pen the size of indiana.
That and no one was trying to rob me on the KTX.
Just b/c something works well elsewhere doesnt mean it will here.
Go ride the metro in DC as an example. Subsidized and still struggling to maintain ridership.

And you still have to drive to train station and have transportation at destination

Different bridge

Well it sure as hell would make the post-LSU drive back to New Orleans more enjoyable.

If there are multiple stops between Baton Rouge and New Orleans you’re looking at a minimum 4 hour trip to get there. And even if it was an hour trip, unless you live right by a stop and work right by a stop why in the world would you ever use this to get to work? These trains will as empty as The CATS busses that do nothing but bog down Baton Rouge streets.

Why would you say that? You think they are loading coal and water onto the train?
3 minute stop at most anywhere along the line. Two transit cops to check tickets.
Save money on commute as well as more time not stuck behind a windshield.
Of course, that is if this is done right.

I would support this if America was dense like Japan and we used Shinkansen technology but we don't. This is why the only Amtrak route that breaks even is the Northeast Corridor (Boston to DC).

Would be a whole lot faster than loading and unloading people that’s for damn sure.

This is Amtrak plus state/local governments of NOLA and maybe TSA.

But it doesn’t break even.

Serious question, have you ever rode a commuter train?
Denver, Seattle, Chicago?

I’ve ridden the subway system in New York. Loved it.
So to answer your question about Seattle or Denver, no. I just believe that in this latest infrastructure bill they should have either focused the money on other systems or saved it

Yeah, totally different setup.
Unless you are talking about heading out to Westchester or Long Island.

I don't get why Louisiana residents are so close minded when it comes to anything of public transportation. It's like they feel a sense of being elitists like they would never use that. Meanwhile, in most other metropolitan areas you see all walks of life from one end of the spectrum to the other using the shite out of it. I could actually get behind this.
Think about taking the train down to the quarter on a random Saturday. Wouldn't have to frick with parking or traffic or anything. Would probably also cut down on DUI's on the way back. And finally. Like you said, I'd rather them spend money on this than to shovel it out to some other nonsense. I agree with that point wholeheartedly. At least there's a return on investment on that for all of us.

why are we building railroads is this the 1800s?
Joe Biden has a fetish for trains. It reminds him of the days of yore where he would ride a crowded train to grope and sniff women every day.

Neither NOLA nor BR are walking cities. Neither are any of the suburbs meaning you still need to own a vehicle with insurance to go too and from the stations. Add to the fact that you will have to pay for parking at the station like you do at an airport and will have to pay more for a train ticket than you would have to pay in gas for commuting (if they actually want this to not be a losing proposition), the train doesn’t make economic sense for an individual to take regularly for work
NOLA, even in the summer, has an extremely walkable urban core. And there is a already a local rail (streetcar) at the train station. 200 ft after walking off the train you could be on a streetcar that would take you directly to Canal Street, the French Quarter, Rivefront, and ferry, and with one transfer, to City Park, or up Canal Street almost to Lakeview. Thats not even counting the bus lines. Plus there are a huge number of jobs within a 15 min walk of the station.
Yes, this will be a problem in BR, but not for NOLA.
