So.....

If there was a quicker, easier, cheaper way to get to the CBD do you think it would increase or decrease the amount of people who start working in the CBD?

I think a lot of people are getting hung up on chicken vs egg.

Louisiana needs both IMO.

In particular, a new bridge somewhere in the Plaquemine area. And a lot of miles of widened state and federal highways.

This thread is going exactly how I expected it would.

Of course Mouthbreathers have no use for enhanced public transportation. But tomorrow you’ll see them on the OT cryings about being stuck in traffic on the way to and from work, all while on an interstate which was never intended for local traffic and daily work commutes.

Its not that simple. Mass transit just hasnt worked well in the US. For a number of reasons. Throwing more money at an already failed concept is beyond stupid and wasteful.

No, because
#1 New Orleans isn’t exactly a booming city for business and the future does not look bright.

#2 not everybody starts work at the same time. People will not want to leave hours ahead of time and extend their work day that much.

If that were all it saved you, you might have a point.

That is like asking if the interstate from BR to NOLA is worth it because it only saves 15 minutes or so vs Airline Highway.

Not really.

The interstate has way, WAY more practical use with the amount of exit ramps it has and it saves much more time compared to Airline than this rail will provide. The station will probably take 20-30 minutes to get to for some folks.

So is there a study indicating how many would ride the train on a yearly basis? Do you know? Does anyone know because I think that’s the most important stat.
After that what’s the cost to build it, to buy rolling stock, and then to operate and maintain it?
I can’t support a train unless I know the answer to these questions, and I don’t know how anyone else can.

Y'all are almost grasping the point. No one lives in BR or cheaper suburbs and commutes to NOLA because of the pain in the arse of the drive plus the costs of the commute.

A plan with a commuter train ties the workforce of the two areas together.

That won’t provide nearly enough demand to justify this project.

Not even close.

Public transit really only works en masse (and not just for the poles) when parking is unavailable or cost prohibitive in dense urban centers. Nola and BR are not those. This is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole just to spend money. Stupid

Tell this to the taxpayers.

quicker

This is debatable

easier

Having to get into my car and drive to a station, then wait at the station, and then take an Uber isn’t really easier than just going from A to B.

It would be cheaper to buy every light rail rider a Toyota Prius than to build/operate the light rail line.

Yeah, but dozens of people will be able to move to Ascension Parish and commute to their tourism and hospitality job in NOLA.

Man, look, this sounds good, but it is going to be an enormous waste of money since people wont have vehicles when they arrive in BR for example and everything is so spread out and lacking in decent public transit that is is going to be a novelty at best.

This state has so many infrastructure issues it’s absurd. That’s something people who have their actual shite together put in place. We need to focus on building actual streets and fixing the streets that are in horrific shape at present. When I drive down a street and hit a pot hole that’s bad enough that it blows out my tire, we have big problems that a high speed rail is only going to make worse since it will divert money away from shite that needs fixing and won’t because it’s now going to a novelty.

Just to throw it out there, rail may be slower than cars and planes, but if we're living in a work remote world and if these trains all have wifi, then you could work on the train. BTR to ATL or CHI by rail might take most of a day but if you can get your 8hr day on a laptop you could get your travel day on a Friday, have a two day weekend and work on rail on Monday. Don't even have to take a day off with a regular 9-5. For some folks that's a pretty cool possibility. Even if you're flying, you still tend to waste two days with travel anyway.

If I wasn't so sure this idiot state will turn it into a boondoggle then I'd be kind of excited about it.

Potential to be a nice little booze ride for LSU games

This country does NOT need high speed rail.

The only place it would work is the Northeast Corridor, and possibly Sounthern Cal. California already abandoned their dream of it.

It's a fairy tale for progs who desperately want to be like Europe.

Based on a 2014 study, infrastructure improvements alone would cost some $300 million-$400 million for the new commuter line.
Nothing says "progressive" like spending $400 million on a transportation method that has been obsolete for 60 years! Wonder if they will put posts for hitching horses upto next to the new stations?

The government should never turn a profit. It's not a business. It's government.
