All of the above...PLUS...insurance. Wood burning stoves, fireplaces, etc. affect insurance premiums.

Cost really. Most contractors do this if its a spec house.

Just about every house we build has a wood burning fireplace.

Thats funny. Let us know how bad your house smells with gas when you lite your fireplace.

I love my fireplace insert. I can load it up at night and it warms my whole house until noon the next day, the central heat never kicks on.

because it costs more to build a house with a wood burning fireplace due to the need for bricklayers to build it,

Not necessary true. 95% or wood burning fireplaces you see in houses today are a metal drop in. The flue stacks right on top. The only brick is at the roof on up IF they decide to brick the chimney. The other 5% of wood burning is an Isokern drop in. Its a mold that looks like a large CMU block. About 3x the price of a metal drop in, but once finished out it looks and sounds as if it were a true masonry firebox. Still cheaper than a full brick fireplace.

I for one like the smell of wood burning, and i like the smell it leaves in my house for the days after i have a fire in my wood burning fire place.

Would i did discover is that there is gas run to my fireplace (moved in not that long ago and the key to turn the gas on was hidden in a cabinet), but looks like the piping might be damaged where it would come out. Anyone know who i would call in Baton Rouge to take a look at this? I would really like to have a gas starter, as opposed to using those piece of shite starter "logs" that don't always get the fire started.

That was an absolute, non-negotiable requirement for our home and ranch house.

You can try Wood Burners. They have a repair service or can point you in the direction of a repair service.

call a plumber since you are fooling with gas. plumbers are the only trade licensed to pipe gas. you may need to call a brick mason for a minor touch up after.
I/we have a real fireplace in our home (i'm a builder). the real masonry fireplaces are expensive to build and are not something to put in a spec house due to the fact that anyone really wanting them usually has their own idea of how they want it to look

Take up a lot of wall space, a lot of upkeep if you maintain them properly, dirty, fire hazard, etc.

Also in the south you are very limited on the number of times you would actually use it.

For my parents' new house it was the insulation. It stays warm inside just from my mother's cooking. If they were to start up a fireplace, they would have to keep the doors open just to keep it comfy.

A real wood burning fireplace would require a real chimney. Those are much more expensive, from a material and space perspective, than a simple exhaust vent that a gas fireplace requires.

People get trashier as the years go on.

But honestly, because you don't have to buy and store logs as well as no issues with ash. I'd still take a real fireplace over a gas one though.

I had a wood burning (heatilator) at my old house and had one growing up. House I bought here in Houston has the full gas/fake log set up. I actually use the gas one. I know they are cheesier and cheaper. But it's nice to turn it on, and when I want to go to bed, turn it off. Don't have to wait for logs to burn out. No clean up and no getting firewood. It's the easy way out, but like I said, I use it a lot more because of it.

Vent free with remote control start and built in thermostat for the win! Easy, clean, wife can do it herself, and burning real wood is horrible for my daughter's allergies.
