New Horizons site
The New Horizons team used the Hubble Space Telescope to search for the next Kuiper Belt object to fly by after Pluto. Using observations made with Hubble on June 26, 2014, the science team discovered an object that New Horizons could reach with its available fuel. The object was subsequently designated 2014 MU69, given the minor planet number 485968, and based on public votes, nicknamed "Ultima Thule", which means "beyond the known world".

I hope it doesn’t bump into any debris in the Kuiper Belt. That butterfly effect could be off the chain.

Density is far too low, mostly empty space out there.

How sharp do they expect the best images to be? Pluto flyby quality?
Considering how small it is and how fast New Horizons was booking, not to mention doing all of this more or less on the fly after leaving Pluto, it's incredible getting anything at all

Well it’s not like they have high speed in deep space.....it’s dial up all over again.
First high resolution image is expected to take till February to load.
All of the scientific data will take till September of 2020 or so to load.
I think they just have a kilobyte/sec

That's what i was wondering. Where will the light come from for us to see what it looks like? Unless they use infrared or something.

They are expecting the best images to be better than Pluto.
It is amazing they were able to predict the shape of this thing using telescopes on Earth.

The sun on Pluto looked kinda like a full moon. So my guess is the sun is about half as bright at Ultima Thule?
