Space is "big"...I've been home with a broken foot and watching all type science shows and the extent of the known universe is not something I can get my head around. I mean I can, but I cant. The theory that the universe began as a infinitely small singular piece of matter....whew

Inflation Theory says that our Universe is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times as big as what we can see, which is 93,000,000,000 light years across.

That means the entire Universe is 93,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 light years across. Yeah, that's big.

Really an awesome post. Thanks for the information and conveying it in a manner that anyone can understand it. You’re a credit to this board.

Op: great post, great information. Hope you will keep us posted. This board needs more shite like this.

So what does this mean when you get across? Is it like when Forrest Gump reaches the coast, he has to turn around?

The size of the universe is really something else. Something my mind cannot comprehend without really studying. I would love to know if there are other humans like us out there and if so, how progressive are they as a society.

I had the same book...the probable alien life parts were cool, like the floaty jellyfish things on Jupiter and the divebomb pterydactyls that hunted them

I think I still have the book at my parents' home. I remember all of those "what if" creatures, good stuff.

For my money, this CGI fake flyby will never top Kubrick's soundstage from 50 years ago.

There's no known way of getting across. There is a particle horizon beyond which we can't see, for example. Everything beyond that horizon is moving away from us faster than the speed of light.

Evolution is universal. No doubt all other sentient beings evolved in a similar manner to us, a big brain with sensors for input; limbs for manipulating the environment, two or more eyes for binocular vision, two or more ears for stereoscopic hearing, nerve endings for touch and heat detection and smell, and perhaps infrared sensors like snakes. There may be significant differences from us in the structure of aliens, but I think they'll be as relatable as other intelligent species on earth are, such as dolphins, elephants and octopuses.

Okay this may be a dumb question...but how long do photos take to come back from this? And also...how the hell do they get photos from this thing

The probe is 6 light hours away, so communication takes 6hrs in one direction. The probe is talking to the Deep Space Network in Australia I believe.

The first clear, high priority picture is supposed to be released on 1/2.

New Horizons has been hauling arse since 2006 and it is only 6 light hours away.

It’s the furthest object that’s been photographed or flown by.
That’s why it’s the first for this event. But it will never catch voyager.

It's all a function of when they were launched and how much excess escape velocity they gathered after all the gravitational assists were complete. Basically, imagine that you have three cars. One leaves today doing 50 mph, one leaves in a year doing 75 mph and one leave in 2 years doing 100 mph. In the long run, the fastest car will always end up the farthest one away because it'll be able to catch up and pass all the ones that left before it, but it can never catch up to a faster car. Same rough principle, but with spacecraft and comparison of velocity in excess of escape velocity.

But because of the gravity assist from Jupiter and I believe Saturn, NH will never be further than voyager

Just read The Future of Humanity by Michio Kaku. It was absolutely awesome.

And think about them evolving on a planet with 10 times more gravity.
They would be super imposing. Or super flat and long.

Gravity that’s too strong could prevent life from developing on a big planet. One of the essentials for life is a liquid in which molecules can freely associate to form the amino acids and proteins necessary for cells to form. If those molecules can’t move about then life is unlikely to develop.

Voyager just cruised through space. It didn't specifically fly by targeted objects to take pictures like this is.

Wait, what?

I’m assuming you are solely talking about after the grand tour.

NH was to bridge a gap generated when they had to decide to pass by one of Saturn’s moons vs going to Pluto.

Correct.

NH was the fastest to ever leave Earth, but the gravity assists from those two gave voyager the greater relative speed.

Yeah Voyager certainly targeted objects, that was the point of the grand tour.
