SASKATOON — Biodiesel and renewable diesel producers in the United States are feverishly ramping up production, says a senior industry official.

Kurt Kovarik, vice-president of regulatory affairs with Clean Fuels Alliance America, said his member companies are gearing up to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) for 2026 and 2027.

In March, the EPA set the blending mandate for biodiesel and renewable diesel to 5.4 billion gallons in 2026 and 5.5 billion gallons in 2027.

That is a staggering increase from the 2025 level of 3.35 billion gallons.

Kovarik said plants had been operating at 50 to 60 per cent of their capacity in 2025 due to the low RVO and uncertainty surrounding tax policy.

Those plants essentially have nine months to meet 12 months of the new RVO.

The new RVOs are expected to be a huge boon for the nation’s 500,000 soybean farmers and the crushers that process their crops.

Greg Anderson, a Nebraska corn and soybean farmer, remembers when soybean prices were US$4 per bushel and soybean oil sold for $0.10 per pound before the biofuel industry took off in the U.S.

These days demand from the biodiesel and renewable diesel sector accounts for 10 per cent of the value of the soybeans he grows.

That contributed $300 million to his state alone this past marketing year
.

The U.S. is producing an additional 10 million tonnes of soybean meal than it was a few years ago.

Schaffer said there has been a surprising increase in domestic consumption of the product.

“We’re sticking more meal into every chicken and pig in the United States than we’ve ever done before,” he said.

But there is still a need for increased exports.

Kovarik was asked if the U.S. will be able to meet the RVOs exclusively with domestically produced feedstocks. He said it’s too early in the new regime to answer that question.

So they are just going to use fertilizers from Oil and Gas to make more soybeans to make diesel? Seems efficient. I’m sure this won’t have any negative consequences.

Although, ironically enough, Rudolf Diesel envisioned the exact future of plant oils powering his engine to help empower agrarian economies and communities.

Why, when all you have to do is lower the refining standards.

The old Trump would have said what stupidity this is

If this helps them from preventing farmers to having to set aside fields and plant soybeans instead then I am for it. Soybean is a great crop since it adds nitrogen back into the soil.

you don't need to add nitrogen back if you don't release it in the first place

which was probably grown as a subsidized fuel additive... which we don't need

Great news is we ITEP'd all of these new renewable diesel facilities so they want to drive the prices even higher to attract the investors.

The feed for renewable is more than they can sell the product for at this point.

Out of all the shite that has gone on the last sixteen and a half months. This is one thing I can say Trump shite the bed on.

Somehow it was packaged to him as a lifeline to big ag instead of the truth that it’s manipulating both the food and energy market hurting consumers. Bet no one told him that fertilizer might be higher than a bird’s dick when new standards kick in.

China backed off of buying our soybeans there for a while. Believe they finally got back onboard.

The federal government grift machine just keeps on rolling. Whoever lines the pockets the best gets the favors done, it doesn't matter who's in charge

Trump sort of left it up to the refiners and growers to come up with a plan. Some refiners are on the growers side these days because they have the market cornered on renewable diesel. Makes their end product worth a lot more if it is forced.

The dynamic or food and fuel crossover prices make the market very volatile

Yes, if you only want to grow food for fuel. What about food we eat?
