I don't understand why there aren't any actual small trucks anymore. The old Ranger, Mazda, Toyota tacoma. The size of a new Tacoma or Colorado is nearly the size of a full size truck in the 80s and earlier. All these new "small" trucks should be considered mid-size and there should be a smaller model as well.

My first truck was a 1993 Isuzu. That damn thing was tiny compared to this Ranger.

The 4banger that is being put in these is a 2.3L Ecoboost. The same engine that is currently in the Mustang. It makes 310hp with 350lbs ft of torque, not too shabby

How does this one hold up vs the ecoboost in F150?

I know several people who have north of 100k on an EB. The early models did have some problems but apparently most of them have been sorted out. The little 2.7 they have in the F150 is quick and gets around mpg 19-20 city. This is a review of the 2016 before the 10 speed transmission.

quote:

Consumer Reports tested the duo and found the 2.7-liter EcoBoost accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 7.0 seconds, two-tenths quicker than the 3.5-liter EcoBoost. Car And Driver’s SuperCab 2.7-liter EcoBoost did the deed in 5.7 seconds, one-tenth shy of the heavier SuperCrew’s 3.5-liter time. Acceleration times at higher speeds were essentially the same, as well.

That's pretty quick for a full sized truck.

It does appear that the towing capacity will be north of 7700 pounds

I have trouble imagining pulling our 26' pontoon boat with this thing.. but I would consider buying if it can.

The Nissan Hardbody was replaced by the Frontier around 2006.

The frontier has been around since the the latter part of the 90s. The current revision was new in 2006.

And it's still the best looking compact out there. If I were truck buying, that'd be the one I'd get.

But for me, there’s a difference between $24,500 and $52,000. Full size truck prices are insane right now and I just can’t justify the need to spend roughly double for a little more truck. And I don’t fault people that think the same.

This is my dilemma. I paid $28k for my 2010 Super crew and I really don't want to go a lot higher. If the Ranger can offer the same space inside I'm game. The 4 cylinder does make me hesitant. Give me a 6 and I'll pretty much be sold.

The Ranger they canceled during the 2009 recession was the last true compact truck.

The Nissan Hardbody was replaced by the Frontier around 2006. The S-10 by the Colorado in 2003. The Tacoma grew in size around 2005.

I don't recall when the compact Mitsubishi Raider or Mazda B series were canceled. Probably in the mid 1990s.

I guess the market wasn't there. Seems like an affordable, lightweight, small pickup would be useful and particularly good off road.

The Hardbodys went away in the late 90s. 98ish? Had a 97 King Cab with the 5 speed, miss that truck.

The Raider was a rebadged Dakota, which was already a midsize. You're probably thinking of the Mighty Max. That was about as basic of a truck as you could get but they ran forever. Was also built by Chrysler if I'm not mistaken. I remember them being advertised for $7995 in the 90s.

I think safety regulations killed off most of the true compacts.

They have been making Ford Rangers in other countries even when they pulled the model out of the US. Saw one of these current gen. trucks in Costa Rica last summer and they do look nice. I think the ones over there had a diesel engine. Too bad that is not an option in the US version. Sadly many car models feature diesel engines as options for international market but not in the US.
