So I have no idea what to look for or even what to ask...I'm needing to replace both the inside and outside unit. What is a good setup in terms of brand and seer rating but is still a good value for my wallet. I had a guy out and he said I should probably go with a 3 ton unit, this is for a 1200 sf house.

Also, what am I looking at...just a ballpark figure.

No idea the specs. My 1300 sf townhouse cost me $8,500 for inside/outside.

Google unit prices online so you'll understand how the pricing works. Install won't be cheap but at least you'll know how much of it is the price of the unit.

Just had one installed a couple of weeks ago. Depending on whether or not you need a new furnace you are looking at $3,700-$4,500.

I used Southeast Heating and Air in Baton Rouge.

Good luck

I bet you couldn't afford a 1200 sqft house in some areas. Shut the frick up and let the guy post his question.

And <---- 2200 Sqft

If you are in Baton Rouge call Dayton heat and air. Been using them for over 30 years. Honest people

I got a Rheem heat pump unit. Not crazy about the noise it makes.

I bought a Goodman 3 ton AC/Furnace combo off Ebay from a wholesaler and installed it myself for $1,700 (free shipping). I then called out an HVAC company for a seasonal "service" to give everything the once over. If you're handy at all, you can pull it off. It saved me 4k.

ETA: and unless your home is very energy inefficient, 3 ton is too much for 1200 sq/ft. 2.5 ton should be plenty.

Be careful. technician might try to get you to replace furnace when it's not necessary.

3 ton unit for 1200 sf is too much.
Look for a 2 ton.
Rule of thumb is 1 ton/ 600 sf.

What is minimum allowed SEER now, 13? I'd still go a bit higher, but unless you're planning on living there 5 + years, you may not recoup the extra cost for a higher SEER init.

"Handy at all" means being experienced with and having the equipment for welding, pulling a vacuum, measuring charge, etc, all the while following best practices and avoiding introducing contaminants and non-condensibles into the line. And that's just off the top of my head as a homeowner who more or less knows what he doesn't know. It's a complete non-starter of an idea for almost all people.

My system was pre-charged and no welding was required. Granted I didn't have a split unit, so life was a lot easier. HVAC companies overcharge IMO for what is essentially a few hours worth of work.

Everyone here is talking about split units, and what I said applies.

I usually tire on the "u poor" jokes but for some reason I literally laughed out loud here.

I am your lone upvote

Can you give more details? Brand? Tonnage? Seer? Inside and outside?
