I rather 1200 sqft house in garden district/Southdown than 2000 sqft in denham, Gonzales. Size isn't everything.

I thought it was good timing. Baws are sensitive around here nowadays.
OP good luck with your unit

Don't have any recent experience on AC prices. But Consumer Reports has a graphic showing reliability for units its members had from 2007-2013. Lower numbers are better.
I have a Trane unit now and had one in my old house as well. Got both from Manning AC in Lafayette (not sure where you're located) Reasonable price for excellent units.

Call Joe Gaurisco with Cajun Coolers 225-278-2942
He installed a 5 ton Train and changed the furnace/air transfer stuff for 4,000. Everywhere else was quoting around 12,000.

RUUD which I hear is basically the same as a Rheem. My original units were RHEEMs. I think it is a 3 ton. IIRC all units in south have to be at least a 14 Sere rating now.
It was both inside and outside unit. I did not replace the furnace or blower. This also included a new drip pan and level switch.

3 ton unit for 1200 sf is too much
What if you have 12-14' ceilings and your attic is insulated on the rafters?

Nope. That was the first time I had met him. He had just put in a unit for my buddy so I called him. He is a super good guy working his own shop so it seems like he is able to cut out the fluff.
Give him a call and at least let him take a look

To each is their own. I wouldn't live in the Garden District or Southdown.

Correction...
rule of thumb is 1 ton per 500 square feet

I had some Mexican fella do my outside unit only and it was $1,800, works like a charm.
I later found out that the ID #'s had been ground down indicating that my AC may be Hot, but it blows cold.

Doesn't matter if you are or aren't. Great company. They use to have a lawn business and worked for the lawn company. Honest trustworthy and prices that can't be beat. I recommend them to every one I know. Make them your first call.

Correction...rule of thumb:
R-22 1 ton per 500 sq ft
410a 1 ton per 600 sq ft.
However I hate rules of thumbs. To properly size the unit a heat load calculation by a qualified person should be done.
The chart with the repair costs by name brands are LOL. If a person doesn't know what they're doing or DGAF it don't matter which equipment you have.
