So about a week ago my son had a friend over and any time a friend comes over I force them to play outside just like whenever I was a kid. We live on a large piece of property so it is not unusual to see all types of wildlife (snakes, racoons, nutria etc). I have taught my son how to safely dispose of snakes with a shovel and i am fairly comfortable with him doing so. Long story short my son and his friend came running into the house saying that they found a cotton mouth near the edge of the pound while they were fishing. I gave my son a hatchet and told him to just take care of it. Minutes later my son comes running back into the house saying that his friend had been bitten. After the kid spent a couple days in the hospital, many viles of anti venom and almost losing his foot the kid is mostly okay except for a little nerve damage.
Now the other kids family is absolutely pissed and threatening to sue, Now I believe me and my son did nothing wrong and if the kid felt uncomfortable he should have removed himself from the situation. How screwed am I?

That's probably a question for your attorney and insurance company

Hope you have good homeowner's insurance. Have you contacted your agent to discuss it at all?

I'll preface this with stating that I am not a lawyer...
You're screwed.
You're screwed.

I hope you have good coverage through your homeowners policy

Perfect place for legal advice. Just ask GeauxJudge.

Call your home insurance carrier and let them know you need to report a potential claim.
Possible that the liability portion of your policy may provide coverage.

Dude no offense but you most likely really screwed up. How old were the kids? But you sent two kids to frick with a venomous snake..., I understand you're comfortable with your son dealing with them, but you gave them a hatchet, that means they have to get well with in striking distance to kill the snake.
He is a kid, legally you are responsible, you put him in the situation.

Have been kind of avoiding the whole situation. Honestly feel like they don't have a case

Did you expect your son to throw the hatchet?

Let's talk billable rate before I give my expert opinion.
ETA:
The hell is wrong with you? With a hatchet you have to get well within striking distance to even attempt a hit.
