Back story, my son is an industrial design major in college, and this semester he's got a forging and welding class. This is WAY outside of his normal routine, so he clearly has no work boots...and this isn't my lane either. Asked my brother in law who's a welder what he'd recommend, since the guy running he class told them to get "fire resistant footwear" and he said any full leather work boot with no laces. He said he either gets Ariat or Justin.

So I started looking through them all and sort of had no clue. I'm assuming it's worth it to get a steel toe version, but other than that I have no idea which styles guys find the most comfortable and easiest to wear. I'd call him back and ask him, but he's gonna say something like, "I don't know man...whatever they had." You guys tend to be pretty particular about things so I figured you'd have tons of opinions. I don't want to get the kid something that's going to be super uncomfortable, because he'd either wear them with his feet bleeding so as not to complain, or stop wearing them altogether and then make it an emergency to try and get a replacement.

Thanks.

Waterproof, composite toe. You can literally run in them.

If it’s just a class for a semester find something cheap. Justin’s are usually good for 6 months or so.

If you just need leather, go with the best fit. My favorite pair of "walking" boots are some plain leather round toe ariats with a riding heel.

If you need safety toe/water proof/electrical etc. I've always gone with redwings.

I used to wear Ariats, but I got some Red Wing boots a couple years ago and like them a lot better. They’ve been more durable than my previous Ariats and I can easily see me getting another year or 2 of use out of them.

You need to find out whether he needs steel toe or not….steel toes are WAY less comfortable than non-steel toes because the steel toe squeezes your toes and the steel shank keeps the boot from flexing when you walk. My preference for steel toes are Doc Marten’s brand. Academy is the best place to get them.

I know Timberland has gotten a reputation because they became part of "urban culture". But I needed a good pair of workbooks a while back and ended up getting a pair of Timberland PRO Ashlar pull-ons and they are great. Very comfortable and durable so far. Not to mention they're about half the price of Tecovas or Ariats.

Vouch for Red Wings too and I’ve tried many different work boots.

ETA: Red Wing PECOS Nailseat Model 1178

I have these. I’ve worn out the sole on these and sent them in to Red Wing and had them rebuilt. Worth all the coin.

Red Wing boots

OP isn’t spending $300 or more

Ariat or Justin boots will be fine here. His son isn’t gonna be a welder for years

ive been using the slip-on doc Martens for years. The problem with slip-ons is that they feel kind of wobbly in the ankle. Almost like the "gong" in a bell. The docs have some extra padding in that area to keep things in place

DSW carries them
