My dog found this snake between a tree line and a pond. He got pretty close to it, but I don't think it bit him. Does anyone know what kind it is? I'd like to know if I should be worried in case it did bite him. Thanks.

That's a water snake. Broad-banded water snake.

harmless less you're a frog or a fish.

Upon close inspection, looking at the eyes, random blotchiness of the coloring versus the lack of concentric banding and uniformity, I can assure with 100% certainty that that is a snake.

Grass snake, ring snake, or water snake. Whatever you prefer to call it.

Don't kill it. There is alot if mythology regarding the grass snake.

It's actually dark greenish brown but looks black

The round pupils are the key. That is a cobra.

Water snake.

Get the iNaturalist app. You can upload your pic and it will tell you what it is, with pics for comparisons.
