My daughter and I have gone round for round over a problem on her math home work. Can someone please show me how I’m wrong.
A stereo is marked down $75. If this is a 15% decrease, find the sale price?
My answer is $425
FYI teacher told her I was wrong.

I got $500. 75 is 15 percent of 500.

I got $500 as well. The 15% discount makes it $425.

$500 X 0.15 = $75.
Answer is $500.
Answer is $500.

Answer is 500
X times .15= 75
75/.15= 500
The 75 dollar mark off is 15% of 500
X times .15= 75
75/.15= 500
The 75 dollar mark off is 15% of 500

Get your kid a tutor. For her sake.

x - 75 = x * 0.85
Solve for x to get normal price. Sale price is x - 75.
ETA: or x * 0.85 too, I guess.
Also, seven fricking idiots.

This was my thinking as well.

So do they want the original price or the 15% discounted one? I think that is where the confusion lies.
Posted on 2/11/19 at 8:22 pm to StatMaster
They want to know what the sale price is if a $75 reduction in price represents a 15% discount.

Dang, all these answers and no $350?
Posted on 2/11/19 at 8:24 pm to gsadle5
Well then your original answer is correct. I don’t think the teacher understands the question. I didn’t understand it the first time I read it either.

Teacher has her convinced the sale price is $63.75
