In my experience Rolex has held value better than any other watch I’ve owned. My omega value dropped by almost 2/3. My Jlc navy seals chronograph was a16 thousand dollar watch that is worth about 10 now. IMO go with the Rolex, if your buying used, try and get original box and papers. Good luck

For some reason when I first meet someone with a big rolex I don't particularly trust them.
In my mind why would any good business person send that kind of money on a watch?
I guess I shouldn't stereotype people like that.
The first thing that struck me was "big Rolex" since the vast majority of Rolex are not large in the modern sense but even Rolex has succumbed to the trends and make larger than their traditional 36-40mm sizes.
I see Rolex kinda like a 911 as both have the douche moniker attached to them but they are both well made and iconic. Rolex is the most polarizing brand inside and outside the watch community, though Grand Seiko pushes that in the watch community.
Rolex simply makes a damn fine upper-mid level sports watch. They do have a level of price premium due to the name but that repays the owner is resale which only a couple of other brands can match. Rolex also has the largest number of iconic watches in their current catalog and frankly just about everything they make in the Oyster line is iconic. Much like the 911 their design changes are evolutionary vs revolutionary and the newest Submariner has strong DNA ties to the first.
Rolex is also one of the most in-house made watches. While for nearly 100 years of watchmaking the Swiss watch manufacturers almost all used subcontractors to build make cases, dials, hands, hair springs, dial etc the move over the last 20 years has been to make as much as possible in-house as it has become prestigious within the watch community to do that. Along with Grand Seiko, Rolex is the most in-house vertically integrated watch company in the world. In general, the more you know about Rolex the more one has to appreciate them.
There is an old theme that people that like watches go through 3 stages with Rolex appreciation and Jack Forster probably explains it better than anyone:
Jack's article
Most people judge people every day on a number of things. When I see a Rolex (especially a stainless one) I assume they like iconic well made items just like when I see someone in a 911, but sometimes they turn out to be a jackhole but that happens just as often when they are wearing a Walmart Casio and driving a F150.
In the end, the vast majority of people could care less and likely not notice what if any watch you have on your wrist.

I like Rolex, but when I see someone wearing one I initially think "has a little money and doesn't know jack shite about watches" because they went the "easy" route. My assumption is probably true about 50% of the time. If I see someone wearing a PP I think "now this mother fricker has money and knows what he's doing in the watch world."

Owlie’s Favorite Watch
I would personally avoid it.
HINT: Read dial carefully.

I was a Breitling guy before Breitling was really a thing.
I love Omega speedys. I love them like I love the air. But my Holy Grail is the Omega Ploprof. One day Ploprof, one day.

You hate Rolex / Sub because the owner "took the easy route", yet love the Speedmaster which says the same thing..

I disagree. The speedmaster isn’t nearly as mainstream imo. I rarely see them in the wild.

Maybe it's the car scene here, but they are nearly as popular as the Sub.
The Speedy is a great watch, but they offer way too many versions of the same watch IMO. It's like what Ford does with the Mustangs and all their "appearance package" models.

Must be, I see subs most days but have only ran across 3-4 others in my daily life

I think the Rolex assumption is probably accurate more like 85% of the time as far as knowing watches per se. Now I think more than 50% actually get the watch is iconic and have a decent idea of the quality. Then again maybe I am just giving people more credit than they deserve.
I used to only wear vintage Rolex watches because they were cool before they were cool and that's what I collected. Over time as I sold them to take advantage of the huge appreciation I begin to pick up some modern Rolex. I have to say they are among the ones I own that are most difficult to take off when it is time to rotate in the morning. There is just something so right about them from design to legibility to the bracelet and the balance. The only thing I would change is adding AR to the crystals.
If I had to choose one forever watch it would likely be between my GMT II or Nautilus 5980.

Lots of people say the same thing about the Speedy and Omega as a whole. I have never really gotten the reasoning even after years of watching it be debated on watch forums. It just gives the consumer more options. If the ones with the 9300 movements weren't so thick I could go crazy in that part of Omega's catalog, I like almost every one of them.

All those watches having a different time would drive me nuts

I've been very happy with my Steinhart.
You could afford several different models and straps for the purchase price of one used Seamaster.
