There are some great hustler zero turns as well.

Look up the swap shop and Craigslist.

It does scalp a little on the short hills.

I was looking at accsssories for my JD ztr and saw this. It’s a roller you mount to the front of your deck to keep the middle off the ground to prevent scalping. You may want to see if your make/model has one available. I searched John Deere front roller.

John Deere has the E series out now. Don't get the lowest model (110 I think), get the 125 or better. I have a D125 with 120 hours over 4 years and it's been flawless. Get some gator mulching blades for it and side discharge. That v twin will cut it even if it's a foot tall.

Box stores have good mowers but dealer stores can have these mowers with upgrades (better engines and transmissions). I prefer Husqvarna Toro or the Cub Cadet (only upgraded powertrain) a 42”-46” is about right. Bigger the better unless you have alot of turning and low spots. Just my 2 cents.

I have a John Deere that I’ve had for 13 years. I’ve never had a problem with it and it still runs and looks like it is new. All I do is clean it and perform the pm on it. No regrets on the purchase.

It's above what you are wanting to spend but I bought a John Deere X350 at Goldmans for 2800. It's been great so far but there is a model in between (SD240) that's a little beefier than the Lowes or HD models.

According to the guy at the sunshine’s dealership the transmissions are the same style in all the models. Also they are sealed transmissions meaning you can’t fix them or work on them if they break. With that said just get the size motor and deck you need. You can get one built a little tougher, but the major concern is transmission and it’s the same. The other stuff is cheap to fix(minus a motor problem).

The Deere models at the dealership are much heavier built than the ones at the discounters. I have a JD LX280 that’s 15 years old or more. 20 HP 48” deck. Changed the battery once. The key to all this is buying something with a heavy duty deck and a Kawasaki or Honda engine. Husquavarna has heavy models I understand and Deere does but only at the dealership. Oh and do not wash them very often. Blow the grass off.

I have a cub cadet push mower that has been very reliable. Two years old and starts on the first pull every time.

I've had the fancy riding lawn mowers... seemed every year, I was putting money in it.
Now, I buy the $180 push mower from wal mart, usually last 2 summers. Good exercise and not spending $4000.
Most men I see riding lawn mowers should have their fat asses pushing one! Just my 2 cents!

I got 13 years out of this type of Snapper cutting just over an acre.

I mulched exclusively, bagging or throwing I can’t speak to how good it would do at those tasks.

I put on new blades once per year. Wonderful machine.

I ended up selecting a Scag ZTR 36" Liberty. It's great.

Understood, but if you want to become more efficient, a ZTR should be considered, if your budget allows for it.

Get it baw! Seriously, though the advice about the JDs is spot on. After a decade or so the trans will wear out on just about all the big store brands but they are otherwise solid for what you need.

John Deere from dealer = John Deere from big box. That is the word straight from a John Deere dealer to me. Same machine.
