Never had a riding mower before. Got roughly an acre of relatively flat yard to mow.
I know you get what you pay for, but what specifics should I look for? HP? Cutting width? Particular brands to avoid?
Not getting a zero turn. Basic steering wheel model is good enough.

You can probably pick one up outside your local Home Depot for free. There will be a bunch standing around.

Good idea. I may try that today.

The time it takes to get some serious responses out of the OT, you could have bought your mower, did the acre, and be reclined back drinking a cold beer.

Do you have a lot of trees and such to maneuver around?

I’m partial to John Deere. I would avoid Murray and Club Cadet.

Somone on here did some good research on mowers a while back. Maybe Will Cover. It had a lot of info. I’ll try to find it if I don’t go boat riding. I’m in the market for a mower also.

I’d just go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and buy a 46” cut or wider. You’ll probably get 15 years out of it with proper maintenance and keep it clean.

My late father-in-law had roughly 1.5 acres he had to cut weekly this time of year and every 2 weeks in the fall/winter and he did so with a John Deere 110 model that worked fine for him.

I believe it was a 42 inch cut and cost about $1200 at the time. I don't really think they've gone up all that much and have held a pretty steady price over the years.

ETA: Checked HD and Lowe's and this mower is now $1700. We may have paid more since it was over 10 years ago now.

I have seriously contemplated buying a few goats for the back yard.

In response to a few other replies, we have a few trees but not enough to warrant a zero turn. I was hoping to stay around the $1500 range if possible.

I have a Husqvarna LGT 2654. I have never had an ounce of trouble from it. The 54" cut is pretty good at knocking out big yards. It does scalp a little on the short hills.

It has an hour meter so you can buy one used with low hours and save about $1k. They are in the $2300 range new.

Murray sucks. MTD sucks. MTD also makes many of the other major brands.

I know you are up north but forget which side of the state you settled into. The Monroe area doesn't have any on Craigslist.

You can pick up a good zero turn used for that price.

Same advice for the OP.

I've seen several cub cadets for that price. They are decent units with a good deck.

Cub Cadet used to be a top rated mower. They were bought out years ago by MTD and it shows. They are not very heavy duty.

The OP is a big Viking warrior and does not need anything lightweight.

I've had a John Deere LA110 for 14 years and I beat the crap out of it and it's still going with no repairs needed. Get a smaller deck if you have small slopes or lumps and bumps in the yard. The wider the deck, the more gouging as you drive over the slopes.

West Monroe. Would prefer to buy new, purely for the warranty. I don't want to get burned with buying someone else's problem.

I have a 15 year old son that will be doing most of the mowing.

If you buy a Deere no shop will fix or service it other than a Deere dealer who will sodomize you dry.

I bought mine with 56 hours on it from a guy that downsized to a condo. He asked $900 for it. I didn't even make him an offer.

Parents have a 30 year old snapper that still runs like a champ. Send it to the local dealer for a $100 tune up every couple of years thats it.

Key for small engines is ethanol free gas.
