I just saw a dog food website say the food I get is "not recommended" yet my dogs love it, are perfect size, and have had 0 medical issues. One is 6 and one is almost 4.

Fromm, Nutro, and Acana.

Avoid any food that has the following in its ingredient panel and you should be good:

1) Corn
2) Wheat
3) Soy
4) By-product

Also know the first 5 ingredients listed comprise about 90% of the bag. At least 3 of these first 5 should be a meat (chicken, turkey, beef, duck, etc.) and NOT corn or any "By-product" ever.

Look at some of your local feed stores. A local horse and cattle feed store has done a really good job at finding good quality dog food at a low price.

This is false, btw. The big box dog food companies know what is best for dogs, but they've bowed to cost-cutting and shareholder profits. They've done the research, they just choose to ignore it for profits.

Also, be skeptical what your Vet says nutritionally for dogs. Vet schools focus on medical issues, not nutritional ones. Many, many vets get huge kickbacks from Hill's (the company that makes Science and Prescription diet) so they are inclined to recommend those foods.

Just my .02 cents. I worked in the dog food industry for almost 10 years.

I use Victor through Chewy.com and have it on auto-ship. $50 for a 40 pound bag, your first order will be $15 off I do believe. It's rated a 4* on dog food advisor. What I like about it:

GLUCOSAMINE 1,100 mg/kg min

Definitely good for my lab.

Also want to add Taste of the Wild (as other have said) and a lesser known one that offers a lot of "bang for buck" is NutriSource.

We've used Fromm and Nature's Balance. I know NB has a salmon line and I believe From does too.

Got a pup with a sensitive stomach?

Natural Balance LID is the only brand we've tried that our dog will consistently eat. I believe they have a salmon recipe.

I decided to give my dog a changed up on dog food. I got the Science diet whatever flavor. He wouldn't touch it until he was starving. I went back to the Beneful healthy weight which he loves.

Very well stated.

You could add some salmon or other fish oil to his kibble. Stinky for us, but they love it.

Our dog liked TOTW for several years, and it's relatively cheap

We're now on Merrick's, which is more expensive but he's on the weight management version and he still loves that stuff, so we've stuck w/ it.

That's a half-truth.

Yes, many vets make money selling high-end or specialty dog food. However, they get to choose which ones they want to offer, based on their 8 years of schooling and experience in animal medicine. It's not all about kickbacks per se... if there's a better brand than, Science Diet per your example, they will decide to carry that one, and get kickbacks from the new company.

The exception here is if your Vet works for a very large chain, in which case they may not have a say-so in which brands they push.
