What’s the general rule for getting a great deal? Wait until late December and try to get an outgoing 2019 before the 2020s come in?
Budget is low-to-mid $30k if anyone has a recommendation. Thinking about Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, VW Atlas.

Get one with enough room for your wife and her boyfriend to have sex in.

they typically put decent incentives on right around Thanksgiving, but the three you listed aren't manufacturers that do a whole lot of incentives. Are you trading in, putting money down, looking for new or used.

Pilot has most 3rd row room

Trading in a POS Traverse that i would NEVER consider again. Will be lucky if I get $2k for it.
Will put down a few thou. Trying to get note down to around $400-$450 max.

At that price point, you'd probably be better off getting a minivan. The 3rd rows in most of those you listed are mostly worthless and take up a bunch of cargo room.

RR has a better hood ornament.

Just bought a 2019 Pathfinder with 10,000 miles. Leather and lots of bells and whistles. With TT&L ended up at $29k.
I was shopping Pilots, Highlanders, and Pathfinders.

I test drove the Atlas and rented a top of line Sorrento to drive from Denver to Aspen (and "camped" in it for four nights). Went with the Subaru Ascent. Love it. Atlas is a little bigger but felt clunkier.

VW Atlas
I'd steer clear of any VW SUV. Toyota and Honda are good quality brands.
If they're basically the same feature wise, I'd choose based on support (warranty, length, coverage).

Due to the insanely high prices of SUVs, I will never buy a new one. Too many options:
Cargurus, Enterprise also sells all kind of vehicles.

Buy used with 10-30k miles on it. Look at the Acadia/Traverse. Walk out if you're not getting the deal you want. In fact, you should walk out at least once in each dealership you visit. And, don't agree to pay all those fees like delivery and the advertising fee.
ETA-I now see you've had a bad experience with a Traverse. I know a couple of folks who like theirs.
