Some children realize the pills alter their personality and refuse to take them/fight you on taking them also. They need other ways to cope besides medication.

Also an old book but The Strong Willed Child may also be helpful.

The fact that you love your boy enough to put yourself out here is a testament to your parenting skills.

Good luck.

Can she prescribe? OP should go to a psychiatrist rather than a psychologist.

I'm not trying to simplify what might be a more complicated problem, but modern living isn't conducive to good mental health for ANYONE.

Sometimes altering the diet, taking away electronic stimulation and good old fashioned sweat can do wonders.

Learn to expect the lack of knowledge on the OT. Their barber and co-workers know all the answers and are happy to share it on important medical issues.

Dr. Edna.

She worked wonders with Thally Draper.

Absolutely for everyone. Two of my children and now my grandchild have never sat still long enough to bother with electronics. Even as adults

Even as much as I post it is always as I am up and down all over the house doing other things. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

So in your mind, abnormal brain chemistry can only result in depression and not hyperactivity?

Get his diet right immediately. Might have to change all your lives for that. Make sure he's exercising for the energy side of things.

I'm no expert, but for sure drugs should be the absolute last resort and in the mildest dose possible.

Before you seek any professional help, try a few things:

Take away all electronics, period save for a tiny bit of supervised television .

ABSOLUTELY NO SOCIAL MEDIA, PERIOD.

Take him outside and work his arse off EVERY SINGLE DAY without exception, rain or shine.

NO SUGARY DRINKS OR TREATS.

Enroll him in a team sport of some kind if able.

Chances are your boy is suffering from being a boy and the above will help channel his perfectly natural gifts.

So a prison sentence for a small kid... got it.

Dobson is polarizing because of his work with Focus on the Family and especially his positions on gay topics, but people neglect to acknowledge he was a professor of pediatric psych at Southern Cal for years and years.

I'm reading Bringing Up Boys right now, and while some of it is outdated and/or irrelevant for the non-Christian, I think people who just know him as a social conservative warrior would be surprised at a good bit of his writings on child rearing.

Maybe, depends on how you do it.

Whether they'd admit it or not, perhaps whether they even know it right now or not, I'm guessing a huge number of the boys in this country would love the opportunity to spend all day every day working hard with their dad beside them.

We went the first 5 years after diagnosis fighting medication. We read all the books, did all of the behavior modification charts and plans, parenting therapy, took everything away, etc to no avail. ODD brains aren't wired correctly - they don't relate consequences to behavior. Medicine helped for a few years, but by the time he got to high school it started leading to other issues. My son is brilliant but hated the confines of school - he just graduated (barely), moved out (thank you Jesus), and started at BRCC. We're off all meds now, but had to kick him out of the house because he still can't follow house rules. He's only that way with us so we have been stuck in a pretty toxic cycle for the last few years. We didn't let him get a license or a car because he was so hell bent on not following our rules. Since he moved out, we are all happier and our relationship has improved immensely.

Don't know anyone in BR personally, but definitely make sure they're familiar with treating both. It's not an uncommon comorbidity, but some therapist aren't particularly adept at managing ODD.

Also not uncommon for younger kids to shed that ODD diagnosis or were misdiagnosed with ODD at a young age. Don't be afraid to re-evaluate either.

With both ADHD and ODD, if you can find something in your area, it would be super helpful to get involved in some parent groups with kids experiencing both. A lot of managing both diagnoses is working on the parenting end of things.
