What's your thoughts on this? Does it deter people from getting sober if they feel they are safe from an OD?

A drug that reverses potentially fatal overdoses such as heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers, and its derivatives is now more accessible to overdose patients and their support systems in Onslow County, North Carolina.
In June 2016, North Carolina became the third state in the country to establish a standing order that allows naloxone to be given to people without a doctor’s prescription (Senate Bill 734).
As of March 2018, overdose survivors treated by Onslow County EMS paramedics who refuse hospital treatment are provided an antidote that can revive them if they overdose again. Officials with Onslow County EMS confirmed on Tuesday, they have implemented a Naloxone distribution program by way of their Community Paramedic program.
David Grovdahl, EMS Division Head, stated that the goal is to put this antidote into the hands of those most likely to be able to use it. “Naloxone is not treatment, it will not fix the addiction, but it can save lives and provide the opportunities for individuals to seek paths to recovery,” said Grovdahl.
When Onslow County EMS paramedics respond to an overdose call, they offer the overdosed individual the opportunity to be transported to the emergency room. If a patient refuses, EMS paramedics will leave them or another person in their support system to assist the person if they experience an opiate-related overdose, with a Naloxone kit.

Well, considering a cold turkey approach to opioids can kill an addict, it's not the worst idea

there aren't many places where emt's and below aren't doing this

You can get it free locally.

Wouldn't they be assuming liability for any future overdoses that the junkie may kill himself with? The dead's family will have attorneys running to them from all over the state to sue for improper narcan use training, etc.

So government tax money is being spent on providing a life-saving drug to a druggie who overdoses doing a dangerous illegal activity by choice, but people with a life-threatening allergy which they were simply born with have to pay hundreds of dollars for an Epi-pen out of their own pocket.
What a screwed up world this has become.

That's false. A person will only feel like they will die from opiod withdrawals, it will not kill them. The only drugs that can cause death from withdrawals are benzos and alcohol due to having a seizure.
I will add I wouldn't wish withdrawals from opiates on anyone because it truly is a living nightmare.

No, just gives you a chance at not dieing. All the other consequences are still there. Nothing will deter someone from getting sober if they want it. And nothing will get them sober if they don't.

Narcan works by literally inducing the user into an immediate withdrawal state. It’s sucks but it will save their life. Cold turkey won’t kill an opioid addict but the withdrawal period makes them feel awful.

The dopeheads will just use it to get high. Make it illegal

They give it away every Friday between 10 and 2 in Baton Rouge. Comes in a pack with needles, tie offs, cottons, Plastic Bio container and Narcan.

I thought hard core alcoholics were the only ones that risked death by quitting cold turkey.

That and benzo addicts. Junkies just feel like they're going to die.

That is wrong.
And besides Narcan doesn’t help with being dope sick. Narcan counter affects opioids.

Narcan is not methodone.
Narcan gets you the opposite of high.

OD on opioids is one of the clearler examples of Darwin at work that I can think of. I can’t understand why we go out of our way to save people that have no interest in being saved.

Something like this is always easy to pass off and say "let nature work itself out"...
...until its someone in your family that needs help.
Eta: what uptopar said is a great example
