National Average Gasoline Price Leaps Back Over $4 per Gallon

The nation’s average price of gasoline has risen 7.0 cents over the last week and stands at $4.04 per gallon, according to GasBuddy® data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The national average is up 5.7 cents from a month ago and is 94.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel fell 9.2 cents in the last week and stands at $5.408 per gallon.
“Average gasoline prices rose in 39 states over the last week, with the national average moving higher, while diesel prices declined in most states, offering a brief divergence at the pump,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “However, that divergence may prove short-lived. Oil prices have been climbing again as markets react to renewed geopolitical tensions and the cancellation of talks between the U.S. and Iran. As a result, gasoline prices are set to rise further this week, with diesel expected to follow. Many inland states—including those in the Great Lakes and Plains—could see average gas prices climb to their highest levels since 2022, while price-cycling markets may also experience another round of hikes in the next few days.”

WTI crude oil was up $1.54 per barrel to $95.94 in early Monday trade, rising from last Monday’s $88.83 level, while Brent crude gained $1.65 to $106.98 per barrel, up from $102.01 a week earlier. The advance highlights a renewed buildup in risk premium, as traders increasingly price in the possibility that tensions could drag on and further tighten global supply.
Looking ahead, volatility is likely to remain elevated. With negotiations stalled and restrictions still in place, markets will continue to react quickly to any signs of escalation or renewed diplomatic efforts. The persistence of supply-side risks—particularly in key transit routes and export infrastructure—suggests oil prices could remain supported in the near term, even as sentiment shifts rapidly with each new headline. “Oil prices have moved up in recent days, as flow through the Strait stays restricted. As a result of Asian refineries looking for alternative barrels, U.S. crude exports likely hit a new record high last week,” added Giovanni Staunovo, UBS commodities analyst, via e-mail.

High gas prices are a good thing.
Your 401k will appreciate it.

it makes me chuckle when folks compare Trump to one of (if not the) worst presidents in history to make him look better

Joke is on you. I don't have to drive that much and it is nowhere near $4 in my area.

still 3.33 in corpus yesterday. If you back out California from the average, the national average would be 3.50

I was seeing 4.39 in some places in Michigan yesterday

Michigan is a bit of an anomaly due to the recent move to increase their gas tax. They will remain significantly higher.

Saw $2.59 at the Baytown Buccees yesterday. Had to look twice.

Wait, Trump said if he got elected, gas would be under $2.00/gallon. Are you saying he lied?

If it wasn't 3.33 in places like Corpus Christi the national average would be well over $4/gallon
