Nassau looks like it sucks- help me out

Disney cruise with the fam and small kids all under 10. Diving or snorkeling is all I would want to do but kids too young to be comfortable making that happen. The forts look cool?
Went in jr high. Snorkled an unimpressive reef, and rode all over the island on a scooter. All I remember were rats in the trees and crappy tourist trap markets.

Just came back from a work conference at Atlantis. The tourist market is very underwhelming. It's dirty and seedy and there's not much there that I would consider worth buying.
Atlantis would be awesome for the kids. The various aquariums are pretty cool and the water park and lazy river were awesome. That's what I would do.

The cruise will probably have an option to buy day passes there. there are a ton of pools, water slides, lazy river, beach, aquarium, shark tank, restaurants, casino, and a marina that will likely have a few badass 200'+ yachts in it.
probably not a cheap day pass but I have no idea.

You are correct, Nassau itself does suck. Like others have said, go to the Atlantis. The best advice I can give you is to stalk the DISBoards forums (WDWinfo dot com). There's some great info there to help you plan the trip. If you end up going to the Atlantis, don't do it through Disney. Book a room at the Comfort Inn on Paradise Island, Atlantis passes are included (just don't use the room), it'll end up costing 1/2 the price.

The only reason to leave the ship in Nassau is for cheaper beer. Nassau sucks.

It is. I signed up for a beach tour for Nassau. The tour guide walked to one spot and pointed to the real beach and then turned and pointed to the fake beach. She said I hope you enjoyed your tour. Turned and walked away. I was standing there thinking WTF, I just wasted my money on this stupid crap tour.

We are doing a disney cruise later this year that goes to Nassau as well. From what I can tell the only real option is go to Atlantis, which costs an obscene amount of money.
I'd be curious to see what activities will happen on the ship while it's docked. Might not be a bad port to just stay on board.

I don't know if they still have it, but we stopped at Nassau on a cruise and did an excursion to race on an Americas Cup boat. It was a lot of fun since the course was just off the Atlantis beach.
