Exactly, we're not moving faster than light so they would actually see 1400 years into our future. They already know who wins the super bowl the next hundred years and maybe even how our species finally parishes.

gonna be great when the world maps out boundaries for all the different countries and by the time we actually arrive on plan it, pangea happened and their broken apart and tsunamis and typhoons knocked out all land mass and the world is a vampire.

Do you realize the Kepler Telescope is what is being used to find these other planets. Its not a big drain on resources like some other government programs.
The telescope looks at a far away star, and sees the shadow of a crossing planet, then they know there is a planet there and how far it is away from that star. If its promising they research it.
100 years ago we didnt have any proof other planets outside our solar system exist. Now they are finding some similar to earth. I dont think thats a waste of resources compared to other things we waste money on.

Well if humans are to continue to exist then it is pretty necessary to find inhabitable planets or moons, understand how life survives, develops, and adapts to conditions. While meanwhile gaining a better understanding of the universe in the pursuit of knowledge

Some people just don't understand that unlocking the secrests of the universe will benefit us greatly.

Even if they had a ridiculous telescope that could zoom in on a specific location like google maps, they would still be seeing that location 1400 years ago. All that you can see in space is the light reflected off of objects, the light that reflects off of earth will take 1400 years to get there so they would be seeing 1400 years into the past.
