A lens doesn't change distance, it just magnifies light. When we see something far away, we see the reflection of light off of it. It takes light 1400 or so years to reflect off of it and hit the lens of our satelite.

Yes, but this helps with large planets more than it does with earth sized ones to my understanding.

Yep. It detects minute changes in the brightness of a star and based off some science wizardry that I do nut fully understand, they can estimate size, distance from the star and all other sorts of crazy, marvelous things.

Not wizardry. Just very very accurate measurements. They get information from a few things, the time of transit, the dip in brightness during transit, the effect it has on the star. When you know the size of the star and the brightness, it's just a matter of punching in X or Y to estimate size and distance.

This is such nonsense. They are making all these assumptions on a planet 1400 light years away and the possibility of life, yada, yada.........
If the Earth were a few degrees either way on it's axis, no life. A little closer to the sun, no life. A little farther, no life. The atmosphere a little thinner or thicker, no life. A few degrees warmer, no life. A few degrees cooler, no life.
They think they can figure out all these variables on something that far way???
