After thinking about this today. One can reasonably expect some forms of life live on this planet. If that is the news that NASA reports tomorrow it is in fact a huge story.

If there is life there I hope they can't get to us because we can't get to them so they could kick our arse if they had the ability to get here.

That's not quite how it works. It is impossible to travel above the speed of light. If that were the case the people on board would see themselves as getting to the planet before they even left (time would travel in reverse for them). Time travels slower the closer you get to the speed of light (relativity) so to the people aboard a ship traveling near the speed of light it wouldn't take nearly as long to get there.

What if you walked forward. or had a machine move you forward, from the back of the ship to the front of the ship while it was going the speed of light?

Exactly, wouldn't you HAVE to be moving faster than the speed of light if you had one of those on a ship going the speed of light.

It's above my intelligence level, but no, I saw a science documentary on this once explaining this exact scenario.

Not the point. The point being that this basically proves that there is other life out there and we are not alone. That question will have been answered

No because light speed is relative, it's the same thought experiment if you consider this:

"If my ship is moving at light speed, what happens if I turn on the head lights?"

The answer to all of this speed of light stuff will be something we can't even comprehend. The journey to such a planet will one day be not much different than sailing across the ocean was four hundred years ago.

I like to think of it in Star Trek terms (I know not real science but I believe something similar is the only way deep space travel can happen). The ship you are on will have to bend space-time around itself forming what is known in star trek terms as a warp bubble. Inside the warp bubble space-time acts normally (people age normally etc.) while outside the bubble space-time is being bent around you bringing starting point A closer to finish line B. I like to think of it as your ship is in a bottle (warp bubble) while space-time is being bent into a huge tidal wave that grows until it reaches the destination then dissipates placing you back into normal space time.

eta: Also IMO we would have to harness the power of a singularity in order to have the juice to bend space-time.

If this is the case, it's not a "matter of fact" story, but it's the single biggest story in human history. If this is the case, then the world is eternally changed tomorrow. The world will completely flip out and we will have to adjust accordingly. Until we truly create AI, no story can hope to come close to this.

Because we know the types of chemicals biology produces. It can be measured in the atmosphere. We know what types of environments life at large can withstand. That's why we'd know.

This is a valid point. It is not theoretically impossible to travel fast than light.
