Exactly. The only "proof" that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light are theories. We don't know jack shite.

This would be different. If the planet's atmosphere is similar to ours it's pretty much a given. I think most people won't realize the significance of this discovery.

Man we've got some bright cookies on this board. Ever heard of a guy named Einstein? Or the theory of relativity? Maybe you should read a book or something. First off, your "insight" on walking forward in a ship moving the speed of light is not groundbreaking. RELATIVITY. The speed of light is the same for all observers. If you are traveling at the speed of light (or say 99.999% the speed of light, because it is impossible for a massive object to even reach the speed of light) you would see light as moving away from you at c. i.e. in your reference frame you are stationary. Walking forward would give you a velocity of a few miles per hour.
This is a scientific fact, if it were true that it is even possible to travel faster than light, all laws of causality would be broken, and the universe wouldn't make much sense at all.
The science tells us that the closer a massive object gets to the speed of light, the more energy it takes to accelerate that object. The energy required to take a massive object to c is literally infinite. You cannot accelerate a massive object to the speed of light. Much less past it.

Just perusing the reddit thread on this, it seems that people are getting their hopes up a little bit. I don't really know anything about this concept, but the telescope apparently doesn't have the ability to detect atmospheric composition for planets.

There are no theories, ideas, mathematical equations that are known for travelling faster than light. Light speed is relative. If you were on a ship moving the speed of light and you flipped a light switch, light would behave the same way it did if you were in a room at your house. It is moving RELATIVE to the ship and you. Motion and Speed in space can only happen RELATIVE to something.

you can't move at the speed of light. it is a physical impossibility. The only way space travel is going to be possible is if they do like they did in Aliens and somehow were able to freeze the bodies, shoot the rocket at planet x , and reanimate them after y amount of years when they get to the planet.

One of the reasons that prevent any object with a mass going at or faster than the speed of light is that the mass is not constant - it increases with velocity and it goes to infinity at the speed of light. So that eventually you need infinite amounts of energy to accelerate infinite mass past the speed of light mark! (and as far as I know we have yet to find an infinite source of energy).

Moving absolute C is impossible simply because we have Mass.
Moving close to C, not so much with the proper power generation.
There are also theories for devices that warp space-time to get around the limitations of C.
Even more, there are some pretty far fetched ideas which could gain ground with the right breakthrough. Einstein-Rosen bridges for example.

It's not an easy concept to grasp. On earth, every velocity we see is measured relative to the ground, which is taken as stationary. In outer space, we have no stationary reference point, so saying something is moving at 50 miles per hour in space is meaningless. We have to have some object that we consider stationary to reference this velocity to. In relativity, it does not matter how fast you are going, because in your reference frame you are sitting still and everything else is moving. (just like if you are in a car, you could just as easily say "im sitting still and the trees are moving past me").
So, Einstien's relativity says that in any reference frame, no matter what it's velocity is, the speed of light is a constant.
