Considering Earth was formed in September on the Cosmic Calendar, I'd say it's highly likely we aren't the first. Other aliens had more than 2/3rds of the Cosmic Calendar to get to the point before our planet was even around.

We have the technology to know the size and distance from its star and the size of the star it's orbiting right now. We also have the technology to make a reasonable assumption on the makeup of its atmosphere.

I just love how the ignorant pop off shite they don't have a clue what they're talking about. They rarely get physical pictures of the planets like we do Pluto, but we more notice how the planet affects it's orbiting star or how a planet can reflect light from its parent star like the Moon reflects sunlight to Earth and wanes, as well as the planet's timing and gravity effects.

We don't need a Polaroid to determine the atmospheric makeup of a distant planet, we just need enough reflected light for a spectrograph analysis.
