Types of pollution, artificial light, artificial EM waves, etc. Those are my guesses.

I don't think it can necessarily be proven, but if they detect an earth sized planet in the habitable zone and can tell what kind of atmosphere it has and whether or not it's a rocky or gaseous planet, I think its a safe assumption that there is come life out there

There has only been life on earth for a small fraction of the time it has existed. So, we aren't only looking for a planet with the correct proportions, atmosphere, and physical makeup, but the right point in time in its history to harbor life. Imagine if you will that an intelligent life form had visited Earth one hundred million years ago. They would have found an unsettling world full of reptilian beasts that would be as alien to us as it would have been to them.

I just happen to be reading Origins by Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Donald Goldsmith and they dedicate an entire chapter to exoplanet hunting.
They conclude that we maybe able to find Earth sized planets in the near future ( which would be now because the book was published a decade ago) but the ability to detect atmospheric type or liquid water is very far off into the future.
I hope NASA isn't about to anounce something completely speculative.

For them to come out an say that life is on that planet based on an assumption is a pretty bold and far reaching statement. Sure, they could say it but that wouldn't mean there was life there. Assumption and proof are two different things. But, hey, how would anyone prove/disprove it without actually going there?

My guess is that NASA will announce the discovery of an Earth sized rocky planet in the habitable zone. At most, they will have the spectrographic makeup of the atmosphere. Anything about potential life would be speculative.

Yeah, I feel like there has been 2 stories like this in the past couple years and its been less than groundbreaking for those of us waiting at our computers with bated breaths.

I'm glad that you found this helpful and interesting.
Most concepts in this field are incredibly mindboggling and exhausting to attempt to comprehend! It is fascinating to me that Einstein just sat down one day, started thinking, and then developed the theory of relativity. (Of course it took much longer than one day to develop the theory, but it all started with a simple thought experiment)

We're not really talking about Earth's history, but the universe's. In this case, Earth has been around since September on the Cosmic Calendar, when Galaxies were formed by March on the Cosmic Calendar. This gives other alien life plenty of time to form and evolve.
