NASA selects the dragonfly probe for its next solar system exploration mission. It’ll be a quadcopter sent to Saturn’s moon Titan to explore and look for nerdy science shite.

LINK
quote:

Dragonfly, as the mission is called, is capable of soaring across the skies of Titan and landing intermittently to take scientific measurements.
quote:

Where a Mars rover is limited to inching forward over a decade or longer, for the Dragonfly team, Titan’s sky and the drone’s nuclear fuel source are the limit.

I was really hoping this is the goal of this new mission. Looking forward to the day when we can develop probes to explore Europa.

Edit: Titan will still be cool af though

Love it. We need to fund missions to the other moons as well. If all goes to plan well have a helicopter flying around one of the moons of Saturn, think about that for a second. That’s amazing and yes that’s real exploration. And every bit as inspirational to the idea of space exploration as having humans in space. And it’ll have an American flag on it while it’s there.

It’s really odd how much space, UFO, and exploration talk that has been going on lately. Just 5 years ago you’d be a huge conspiracy theorist now it’s mainstream.

How many current astronauts can you name.

Do you remember the excitement of the Mars landers as the entered the aptmosphere and the rocket crane lowered them, how exciting it was to see Pluto, when Cassini ended its mission and all of the epic pictures it gave us, the close up look of Jupiter from Juno?

Probes can and are exciting and can expire generations just as much as knowing there’s a human in space. They can go places we can’t, stay out there for years collecting data, really get exploration done and broaden our knowledge of the tiny spot of space we inhabit.

I get that the concept of humans in space is an appealing one and I’m all for it too. But don’t discount the value and excitement that comes with unmanned exploration. There’s nobody up there manning the Hubble Space Telescope and look at all we’ve gained from it.

Thats cool. Manned exploration would be cooler and more inspiring.

You’re right, it does. Funding exploration to expand human knowledge seems like a good investment to me.

How about we use the money to solve problems here on earth instead of taking pretty pictures and looking for the boogie man out in space.

What problems? Feeding and clothing all the useless dregs of society? I say take the money from them and put it in the space program.

How about we make sure we can escape to space and save our species if we do something stupid on Earth.

Plus I’ll never be able to realize my dream of being a space pirate if we keep feeding poor people and building roads and shite.
