While I think it means it's possible for there to be life, I still doubt there is life on Mars today. Between the very thin atmosphere and high levels of radiation that bakes the planet due to the lack of a stong magnetic field, I'd say chances of life being there today are very remote. Now that's not to say that at one point in the distant past there wasn't life there, that's entirely possible.

Am I the only one who thinks it is weird that we always assume that life has to have an Earthlike environment to survive? Who's to say microbes there didn't evolve over the last several million years to thrive under the radiation and less pressurized atmosphere?

I'd be interested to see how salty that water is to maintain liquid though.
That's more of a problem to life than the pressure and radiation.

Salt is so ductile of a rock, you can almost treat it like a plastic solid - really slow moving liquid.

Not that I agree with the level of his dismissal:
Radiation can be worked around in a number of ways.
The very very low pressure is a legit issue though.
It's almost a vaccum.

I mean the fact that it needs to have a dissolved solute to stay liquid at Martian temperatures and pressures.
It is kind of a moot point celebrating water and it's implications for life if it is running at 20+% salinity.
Life may find a way, but there is a limit to how stacked a deck you can expect it to fight.

I never said it was impossible, just improbable. Along with the thin atmosphere and lack of a magnetic field, Mars also lacks nitrates in it's soil, which all life that we know of needs. It also has far too much carbon monoxide in it's atmosphere. If there were life on Mars there should not be that much CO. Here, you can read the details in this article...

Not necessarily. They need food. They wouldn't be floating in space because it is a pure vacuum (mostly). There is an abundance of CO2 in Mars atmosphere they could be feeding off of. Maybe they are what is creating the trace methane that was found in the Mars atmosphere as well.
Obviously just spit balling around here.

If there is life on Mars, they are chemotrophs living under a microbial turtle shell that would put tanks to shame.
They have to use co2, but it won't be much.
Or they live in a place where the co2 vapor pressure is much, much higher.
