This was always inevitable. Due to SLS and Orion sucking up absurd amounts of money for years, NASA was late in awarding contracts for the lunar landers and spacesuits. Even a fully unfettered SpaceX would never have been able to make NASA’s original timeline.

SLS is already an obsolete piece of equipment. The only reason we're even using it is because of sunk costs at the this point.
Yup! You totally get it. Before it was built it already faced obsolescence issues. I know, I worked reliability for it.

So is the issue a single thing or overall "everything is behind" deal? Is there a smoking gun or was the time frame too tough for 2024?
And dont tell me the issue is that we need to train a woman and person of color

Artemis III won’t go until 2028 I think.
They gotta let SpaceX ramp up Starship testing without all the paperwork hurdles.

The issues are the main engines and the technology behind them. They are still using SSMEs (Space Shuttle Main Engines) to power SLS. Once they run out of those they have to redesign or purchase them. Then they have to be certified for man rated spaceflight. The avionics and other systems are archaic at best. There are over 70,000 failure modes. Literally if printed all the failure modes off and stacked the reams of paper it would be half the height (212 ft) of the full stack. It's at least the height of the core stage. Then add to the fact the valves and other systems have to either be (a) sole sourced from a single vendor or (b) have to sit on a self and have a shelf life for the life of the vehicle....it's a poor way to run a space vehicle management.

For this flight, SLS is behind on the construction and certification of the vehicle. They wanted to get away from the ICPS (Interim Cryo Prop System) second stage but that fell through and they had to use another ICPS that ULA designed/built. They are gonna run out of those engines/modules QUICKLY. Next SLS have different upper stages and those all have to be certified. Heck the only common parts are the core stage and the SRBs. Above that it gets different for man vs cargo module.

Every Senator’s son in law’s company wants a sub contract.

The most logical thing at this point would be to use SLS until the engines and parts run out and hand the whole program over to Starship. Use what you already have built because you've already paid for it and then move on to the better and cheaper system.

You'd think we'd have learned after Lisa Nowak.

The issue is that the program is funded and managed by people who think "woman and person of color" is at least equally important as and probably more important than "building functioning spacecraft on schedule."

Will be harder to quiet the conspiracy theorists. 1960s was a long time ago.

They others with multiple bases on the moon and who probably brought it here are pissed at NASA again

Thanks for the info. Using that logic, it is possible that Artemis 2 and 3 could be totally scrubbed?
Like they are trying to play catch up with something that they cant catch
Is that situation, trying to use old technology, a function of funding or just old people not wanting to change?

I know ow you're not asking me but I don't think Artemis 2 and 3 will be scrubbed. They'll use the SLS for the first few missions at which point I think the duties will go completely to SpaceX or maybe a combo of spacex and some of its competitors. SLS is the last rocket that NASA will own and operate imo. They're basically out of the rocket game at this point and will be purely a research agency, which is probably for the best.

The saddest thing about this is, the US went from 1 man in space for 15 minutes to landing 2 men on the moon in just 8 years.

Artemis should be canceled immediately; of course it won’t be as it’s the result of Lockheed Martin and Boeing lobbying.
