Are you saying that the existence of life on other planets proves that religion is false ?

Are you saying that you wouldn't question the existence of god?

All i am saying is it would bring up a ton of questions. Therefor it would be interesting (potentially scary)seeing how people would react.

Another topic should be how the governing bodies of the planet will evolve/dissolve. If we contact an intelligent species directly, is it wise to remain separated by so many national boundaries with a United Nations as weak and un-unified as it is? Or do we put much more emphasis into the UN and give them greater power to make decisions for the whole of the world in regards to this new species?

I have this weird conundrum in my head. I believe that man is basically good, but I also don't have faith in man to stay good in the face of scarce resources.

In other words, I still think the Jews and Palestinians will be blowing each other up over a small corner of the Earth even after we find out we have a bigger threat facing us.

But who knows, maybe they wouldn't be able to adapt to our environment or would be killed off by our germs.

If they are capable of interstellar travel, they would know exactly what our environment consists of and how to handle it.

In all likelihood, they would use artificial life/intelligence to carry out their tasks. We are doing that now and we are well below the level of knowledge it takes to perform interstellar travel.

My guess is that we will find some fossils or carbon based evidence that life has existed within the next 20 years.

NOT highly intelligent life, though. Unless they find us first.

You realize "life" will probably mean some single cell organism. Not 4 armed creatures with horns and shite.

It's better any intelligent life that can travel the vast distances of interstellar space not know we are here. Think Native Americans V. European Colonists.

If they are traveling below light speed, which is VERY likely, they will probably be extinct by the time any artificially manned vehicle they sent arrives here.

There could be life out there but we could never know it due to the vastness of space and simply not being around at the same time that other civilization is reaching out to us. We've been sending out radio signals for almost 100 years at the speed of light. That doesn't even scratch the surface of of the distance between some points within the Milky Way. What if some other civilation sent us a message 200 years ago?

Which is a mere fraction of a second on the universal calander.

That thread we had a few weeks back about the great barrier to civilizations had some discussion on this.

Even if there was an intelligent species sending out signals up until 100 years ago we wouldn't have known about it. So what if we are sending out radio signals and no one is hearing them either because they
A) Haven't invented radio transmission yet or
B) Have advanced so far past it that it would be like a dog trying to describe its day in barks to a human.

NASA's attempt at keeping themselves relevant in light of their failures of doing much of anything constructive in the form of manned space travel. But I guess you're limited with budget constraints.

I have always said this:

It's pretty damn arrogant of Mankind to assume we are the only intelligent life in the Universe. It takes a Human to make that kind of assumption.

Of course, I was drunk off my arse in a bar when I am told that came out of my mouth.

Fermi Paradox

Please click the link I provided. Awesome article on the fermi paradox which estimates the probability of the existence of ET civilizations in the universe and reasons why mankind has not yet had evidence of or had contact with such civilizations. Prepare to have your mind blown.
